Al Roker was scolded by Lenny Kravitz on the Today show on Thursday morning after he made fun of the singer’s guitarist’s performance in a rather embarrassing moment live on air.

Lenny, 60, performed live with his band at Today Plaza and chatted between songs with Al, 70, and co-hosts Craig Melvin, Sheinelle Jones and Dylan Dreyer, but was not particularly impressed by a comment made by the weather presenter.

When Craig, 45, took the time to thank Lenny’s band, Al joked, “And you have Howard Stern on guitar,” referring to the musician’s striking resemblance to the controversial radio host.

Al’s co-hosts laughed awkwardly and Lenny could be heard saying “Ehhhhhhhh” as Al walked up to the musician and asked, “What’s your name real quick?” but he remained silent and simply answered by strumming his guitar.

“That was good!” Sheinelle commented before the show switched to Carson Daly, who was eager to talk about the 2024 MTV VMAs, but not before mocking his co-host, saying, “Al, you got off to a great start this morning, you had me on Friday, and now the guitarist hates you…”

Carson, 51, was referring to another mistake Al made earlier on the show when he accidentally said it was Friday instead of Thursday.

When his co-hosts corrected him, Al shouted, “Well, it feels like Friday! With Lenny Kravitz, every day feels like the weekend!”

Lenny and Al are actually blood related, as the TV presenter was a second cousin of Lenny’s mother Roxie Roker, who sadly passed away in December 1995.

Earlier in the show, Lenny admitted it felt “great” to be back at Today Plaza, saying, “I grew up in New York City, my parents worked at Rockefeller Center where they met at NBC. So I grew up surrounded by all these buildings and in this great city and it’s always wonderful to be here.”

Savannah Guthrie responded, “Can we all say we’re family now?” and then added, “I know you have Cousin Al,” referring to their family ties.

Lenny also revealed how special it was for him to be back at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night, as he had attended the annual event with his mother once before her death.

“As I said, when I was there, 31 years ago, when I won Best Male Video, my mother was with me and that was the last awards show – and the first awards show – that she ever went to before she passed away. So last night really meant a lot to me and I dedicated it to my mother,” he said to cheers from the crowd.

The father of one took the stage at New York’s UBS Arena for a live performance, later accepting the award for best rock video for his song “Human” and honoring his late mother.

When Al asked the guitarist his name, the musician remained silent and just strummed his guitar.

Lenny will perform live with his guitarist at the MTV VMAs 2024 at the UBS Arena on September 11th.

“31 years ago my mother was with me at an awards show, the VMAs, so I dedicate this to her.”

Roxie was an actress best known for her role as Helen Willis in The Jeffersons. She also appeared in television series such as All in the Family, Fantasy Island, A Different World, 227, and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper.
