Creator of Love Triangle, Season 5

(This story contains spoilers from Emily in Paris Season four, part two.)

In “Roman Holiday,” Emily Cooper not only experienced a vacation, but also a new adventure in love and life.

Emily in Paris Season 4, Part 1, ended with Emily (Lily Collins) and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) in a great place. They had just declared their love for each other and Camille (Camille Razat) had moved out of Gabriel’s apartment so he and his new girlfriend could finally be alone. But of course, it wouldn’t be Emily in Paris if this blissful happiness would last.

After a break of about a month, part two (now streaming on Netflix) returned and the first episode found the couple spending Christmas Eve with Camille’s family in Megève after Emily’s flight to Chicago is cancelled. Gabriel leaves her at the top of a ski slope to pursue Camille, leaving her stranded on the mountain until a mysterious Italian man helps her get down. When she reaches Gabriel, she ends their relationship because she is fed up with always being second to Camille.

“Sometimes they have great chemistry and a great connection, and yet there are obstacles,” Emily in Paris Creator Darren Star tells The Hollywood Reporter of the short-lived fairy tale. “And maybe Emily and Gabriel aren’t meant for each other right now. Maybe they will be later.”

Later in the season, the mysterious Italian from Megève, aka Marcello Umberti (Eugenio Franceschini), returns and charms Emily. After a great date in Paris, she visits him in Rome and then in his small town of Solitano, where his family produces some of the finest cashmere products in the world.

“I wanted to introduce a new love for Emily that feels like a fresh start after all the drama with Gabriel,” Star explained of the love. “Marcello comes into Emily’s life in an unexpected way and opens the door to so many possibilities for Emily: new country, new culture, new adventure.”

Emily in Paris Season four ends with Agence Grateau opening an office in Rome, which Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) wants Emily to manage, giving her a reason to stay in Italy near her new admirer. Mindy is on her way to Shanghai to work as a judge at Chinese pop starwhich led to her self-imposed exile from China. Camille adopts a baby and becomes a single mother. And Gabriel is on his way to Rome after an emotional conversation with Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) makes him realize that his pride is causing him to miss out on the “most amazing girl in the world.”

Below, Star tells us what we can expect from this new love triangle between Emily, Gabriel and Marcello and whether there could be more to come in Rome. Emily in Paris‘ future while we wait for a fifth season renewal.

Over the last few seasons, I found it increasingly difficult to sympathize with Camille (Camille Razat), until she redeemed herself somewhat at the end of season 4. What were your thoughts on her?

I think Camille definitely felt like she was on her own. She was thinking about the baby she was going to have with Gabriel and where that might take the two of them. She was really confused and unsure at the end of last season about what she wanted to do and where she wanted to go. And after she had a moment to think about it and try to figure things out for herself, she thought she was obviously going to have a baby with Gabriel and that they were going to be part of each other’s lives. I don’t think it was necessarily an intentional plan or a conspiracy to be with him, but I feel like they were going to build a connection and bond through that baby and I think it was a huge disappointment to find out that she actually wasn’t pregnant.

We found out early on in the second part that Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) had moved on, and I was torn because while I was really happy for him, I also hoped that Emily (Lily Collins) and Alfie would get back together. Why did it hit Emily so hard?

I think everything was getting to her. She just felt like she had made every wrong decision in that moment. And I think she really did love Alfie. Alfie had a moment where they could have stayed together and been together at the beginning of the season and I felt like Emily realized, okay, maybe her heart belongs to Gabriel. It was like a set of circumstances. I think Emily was happy for him and just unhappy that she was alone and without anyone for Christmas.

When Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) left Emily on the mountaintop in Megève, that was the last straw. Why was this such a big deal in her eyes?

I think she realized that she was always going to be second priority to him, and she just didn’t want to continue that. After that moment, there would have been a chance for some reconciliation. There was a moment where, from Gabriel’s perspective, a lot of their relationship was always about Emily. And I think there’s a really important scene where they’re arguing and he basically tells her that their whole relationship is in a different language and they don’t communicate and they don’t really know each other. He and Camille have a big history together, and it’s not that Gabriel didn’t want to be with Emily, but I also think he made it clear that he cared a lot about that. The relationship was very one-sided to a large extent.

Now that you mention that scene, it was really impressive. And then of course Genevieve (Thalia Besson) comes in and makes it even worse, but whatever. (Laughs)

(Laughs) I think that scene was really important. It’s the first time we really got to hear from Gabriel about how things felt from his perspective. And I think he was trying to juggle a lot. He was trying for a while to maintain a relationship with Emily and hold onto the idea that he was going to be a responsible father and partner to a child he was supposedly going to have with Camille, and that he thought he could have it all and do it all. He was very disappointed when he found out that wasn’t going to happen. But at the same time, I think he felt like Emily was treating him unfairly.

Do you ever worry that you might separate Emily and Gabriel so much that people might say, “I don’t want them together anymore”?

I don’t know. I think real relationships have a lot of ups and downs, and so there’s a point where the audience could actually see them together. But then the show would be Emily and Gabriel being happy together. And I’m not sure that’s the show that anyone really wants to watch either. So I think sometimes they have incredible chemistry and an incredible connection, and yet there are some obstacles. And maybe Emily and Gabriel aren’t meant for each other right now. Maybe they are later.

I really liked Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) and Emily and sometimes I wished she would break away from Gabriel and move on with Marcello. What was your goal when you introduced him?

I wanted to introduce a new love interest for Emily that feels like a fresh start after all the drama with Gabriel. Marcello comes into Emily’s life in an unexpected way and opens the door to so many possibilities for Emily: new country, new culture, new adventure.

The final conversation between Gabriel and Alfie in Paris brought tears to my eyes when Alfie told him that his pride was getting in the way of him being “the greatest girl ever”. Tell me about that scene.

I think Alfie really cares about Emily and I think that at the end he felt that maybe Gabriel and Emily were really meant to be together and he understands how much pride and misunderstanding got in the way of their relationship. He doesn’t want Gabriel to make the mistake he made because I think pride got in the way of their relationship. be relationship with Emily. And maybe there was a point where he could have stepped in and said, “I don’t care. I want to be with you, and you’re the person I want to be with.” And he had a moment to do that, and he didn’t take it, and I think he didn’t want Gabriel to make the same mistake, basically.

In the final moments of the fourth season, it seemed like a kind of rebranding of Emily in Paris To Emily in Rome. So if you get renewed for season five, is that something you’d like to explore further?

We’ll be spending some time in Rome. But she hasn’t changed her Instagram name to “Emily in Rome.”

She almost did that.

She hasn’t. I mean, Agence Grateau has opened an office in Rome. You can be in more than one city, and Emily can spend time in Rome. She can also spend time in Paris. She doesn’t leave Paris.
