Harris and Trump enter post-debate home stretch with competing rallies in key swing states

CHARLOTTE, NC — The first and possibly only debate between Vice President Harris and former President Trump is now behind us, and the two major party candidates are resuming their winning streaks in key general election swing states.

Harris arrives in North Carolina’s largest city Thursday afternoon to attend the first of several rallies in this key southeastern swing state before an overnight event in Greensboro.

On Friday, the Vice President will hold two campaign events in Pennsylvania. Tuesday’s debate took place in Pennsylvania, the swing state in which most of the electoral votes are up for grabs.

There are less than eight weeks until Election Day on November 5, and early voting has already begun in several key states. Harris’ campaign team says it is entering a new and more aggressive phase. It wants to build on the Vice President’s strong performance in the debate, which many political experts consider to be strong.

“This is the home stretch. The pace of the campaign is going to get much more frenetic,” veteran Democratic strategist and former chair of the Democratic National Committee Donna Brazile told Fox News.

Brazile, who ran then-Vice President Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign and is a close confidant of Harris, said: “I’m not going to let my foot off the gas.”

While Harris takes the stage in Charlotte, Trump will be in Arizona, a crucial battleground in the Southwest. On Friday, Trump travels to another swing state, Nevada.

North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Nevada, as well as Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin were the seven states with razor-thin majorities that decided the outcome of President Biden’s victory over Trump in 2020 and will likely determine whether Harris or the former president wins the White House this year.

Current national opinion polls and surveys in the swing states indicate that the battle between Harris and Trump remains a decision with a large margin of error.

Harris arrived in North Carolina as the latest Fox News Power Rankings released Thursday suggested Trump had lost his lead in the Tar Heel State and neighboring Georgia; the two battleground states are now considered tiebreakers in the race for the White House.

“We are still the underdogs in this race,” Harris told her supporters at an election party in Philadelphia after the debate.

For the second day in a row, the Harris team launched a new digital ad using clips from her debate against Trump to highlight key policy differences with the former president.

Meanwhile, the Trump team has launched a new ad in Pennsylvania targeting Harris over the fracking issue.

Harris has been pilloried by the Trump campaign and her Republican allies for giving only one major interview and holding no press conferences since taking office as a Democrat. The Trump campaign announced this week that the former president will hold another press conference in Los Angeles on Friday. (It should be noted, however, that Trump did not take questions at his previous event, which was billed as a press conference.)

Sources close to Harris’ political circle say the vice president is expected to attend more media engagements in the coming days and weeks. Harris is scheduled to participate in a discussion with journalists at the National Association of Black Journalists this month. Harris was criticized by Trump for not attending an earlier engagement with the group, which the former president attended in person.

Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, is continuing his week-long campaign tour of battleground states. Walz will be in Michigan and Wisconsin on Thursday and Friday.

Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, headlined two high-profile fundraisers in New York City on Thursday but is expected back on the campaign trail in the coming days.

Referring to the calendar, Brazile said, “It’s time to take action where it matters, by reaching out to people where they are.”
