MTV VMAs: Taylor Swift ties Beyoncé as most awarded artist, while Katy Perry surprises on stage | Ents & Arts News
Taylor Swift has won seven awards at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), tying Beyoncé’s career total of 30 awards and becoming the most awarded female musician in VMAs history.
Fastwho used her platform to urge Americans to vote in the upcoming presidential election, won awards including Video of the Year for “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone, Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration.
While Swift named Beyonce as the most awarded solo artist in VMA The singer of the Single Ladies story has already received awards for her membership in the girl group Destiny’s Child and her collaboration with husband Jay-Z as The Carters.
Beyoncé did not win any new awards at this year’s VMAs and was also shut out of the Country Music Association Awards earlier this week.
Accepting her award for Video of the Year, Swift thanked her boyfriend, NFL player Travis Kelce, for his support, saying, “Everything that man touches turns into happiness, fun and magic.”

She also urged her fans over 18 to register to vote in the upcoming US election, but avoided directly mentioning her support for Vice President Kamala Harris.
On Tuesday, after a presidential debate between Ms. Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump, Swift supported the Democratic candidate on Instagram and wrote: “I think she is a calm, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country when we are led by calm, not chaos.”
Swift jokingly signed her endorsement deal as a “childless cat lady” – a move Fleetwood Mac star Stevie Nicks followed shortly thereafter.

Elsewhere, Katy Perry also made VMA history: She became the first singer to win the Vanguard Award – the VMA award for lifetime achievement – after winning the Video of the Year award and hosting the ceremony in previous years.
The “I Kissed A Girl” singer had a lot at stake after her comeback album “143” was panned by fans and critics alike and the first two singles from the collection disappeared without a trace.

Perry performed a medley of her most popular songs, including “Roar,” “Teenage Dream” and “Firework.” Her stage show also included a daring performance with rapper Doechii, where the two wrapped their legs around each other and lay on the stage.
Accepting her award, presented to her by her husband, British actor Orlando Boom, Perry said: “There are so many things that have to come together to have a long and successful career as an artist. There are no decades-long coincidences.”

Bloom and Perry kissed on stage after the singer accepted the award, and Perry thanked him for “holding me up.”
She also paid tribute to her four-year-old daughter Daisy Dove, saying: “Finally, for my Daisy, the only flowers I will ever need.”

Additionally, Sabrina Carpenter won Song of the Year for “Espresso,” while “Good Luck, Babe” singer Chappell Roan was named Best New Artist and Blackpink’s “LISA” won Best K-Pop.
Wearing the same silver sequined Bob Mackie dress that Madonna wore to the 1991 Academy Awards, Carpenter surprisingly kissed an alien during her performance of a medley of her hits, including “Please Please Please,” “Taste” and “Espresso.”

Meanwhile, Roan drew inspiration from Joan of Arc for her medieval rendition of “Good Luck, Babe,” a summer hit that made her a star.
Roan – who sparked a conversation about boundaries last month after posting videos online asking her fans to stop “harassing” her – recently faced backlash after canceling two European shows for the VMAs.

Eminem won awards for best hip-hop video and best visual effects for his performance of his two latest singles, “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me,” in front of a stage full of dancers, all wearing dyed blonde wigs.
The production was an allusion to Eminem2000: VMA performance by “The Real Slim Shady,” where he entered the ceremony along with hundreds of extras dressed exactly like him.
The 2024 MTV VMAs will air in the UK on Thursday 12 September at 8pm on MTV and Paramount Plus.
