Trump attends 9/11 event with far-right activist who spread a conspiracy theory about the tragedy

On Wednesday, Donald Trump attended a 9/11 memorial event with a right-wing extremist activist who had spread the false narrative that the terrorist attack was “an inside job.”

Laura Loomer, a Trump ally, accompanied him to a fire station in Lower Manhattan, where he and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, met and posed for photographs with firefighters. Some of the station’s members died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Throughout Wednesday, Loomer posted videos on social media documenting Trump’s visits to commemorate 9/11. She also attended the presidential debate on Tuesday night and traveled on Trump’s plane.

Just last year, Loomer posted a long message on X that included a video falsely claiming “9/11 was an inside job!”

Loomer did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday evening about her departure from Trump and whether her views on 9/11 had changed.

In a lengthy post on X after NBC News asked for comment, Loomer said, “To the many reporters calling me and obsessively asking me to speak to them today, the answer is no.”

“I’m not sure why this is so hard for people to understand, but I believe in unconditional loyalty to those who deserve it,” she said in her post. “And no one deserves our loyalty and unwavering support more than Donald Trump.”

NBC News asked the Trump campaign for details about the decision to have Loomer travel with Trump, the extent of her conversations with him and whether the campaign knew she was spreading 9/11 conspiracy theories before inviting her to accompany Trump.

There was no response from the campaign, instead a statement was made about Trump’s September 11th commemoration.

“Today, President Trump put politics aside and stood alongside Kamala Harris and Joe Biden to honor those who lost their lives in the worst terrorist attack in our nation’s history,” a campaign official said. “This day was about none other than the souls who are no longer with us, their families and the heroes who bravely saved their fellow Americans on that fateful day.”

The Harris team declined to comment.

Loomer has promoted a number of conspiracy theories in the past. Last week, she said school shootings were allowed to happen to help Democrats, she has promoted conspiracy theories about illegal immigrants registering to vote in November, and she has spread the baseless story that Haitian immigrants eat cats. She has falsely claimed that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce had an “arranged relationship” to “influence the 2024 election,” among other falsehoods.

Loomer’s closeness to Trump does not seem to go down well with all of his allies.

On Wednesday, Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia called on Loomer to delete an “extremely racist” post targeting Vice President Kamala Harris.

“This is horrific and extremely racist. It does not represent who we are as Republicans or MAGA,” Greene, a Trump ally, said on X on Wednesday night. “This does not represent President Trump. This behavior should never be tolerated. @LauraLoomer should remove this.”

In a post Sunday, Loomer launched a racist tirade against Harris, saying that if she won, “the White House would smell like curry and White House speeches would be delivered through a call center and the American people would only be able to provide feedback through a customer satisfaction survey at the end of the call that no one would understand.”

Harris is the first person of Indian descent to be nominated as a presidential candidate by a major party. She is also the first black woman to be nominated as a candidate by a major party.

Following Greene’s tweet, Loomer attacked her in a series of posts, adding that she would not delete the original post.

Greene has spread anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and made controversial remarks about the Holocaust. She compared mask mandates to the Holocaust before apologizing. She has also previously expressed support for the far-right conspiracy theory QAnon and has been criticized for a number of racist comments. She has made derogatory comments about George Floyd, a black man killed by Minneapolis police, calling him the “convicted felon George Floyd” and saying Democrats “worship” him.
