Lenny Kravitz to sing “Human” and “Fly Away” with Quavo at the 2024 VMAs

Rock’n’roll icon Lenny Kravitz performed a rousing medley of three songs at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday (September 11).

Introduced by British singer-songwriter Suki Waterhouse – who called him a “rock god with a sound all his own” – Kravitz began his set with his signature 1993 classic “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” wearing a white boa and a sheer silver-fringed vest. He then moved seamlessly into his disco-tinged 2024 single “Human,” flanked by backup dancers and back-to-back with his open-vest co-guitarist.

Kravitz closed the medley with a performance of “Fly,” a reinterpretation of his big 1998 hit “Fly Away” featuring Quavo, which he originally released in May. The trap version had everyone in the crowd, from Post Malone to Paris Hilton, singing along to the still-memorable original chorus.

Kravitz already took home a Moonperson at the Video Music Awards pre-show, when he won Best Rock Video for “Human.” (He had been nominated three times before in that category, when it was still called Best Rock Video, but had never won.) It was his second overall win at the awards, having taken home Best Male Video in 1993 for “Are You Gonna Go My Way” – the song he also sang at this year’s ceremonies in his VMAs stage debut, with help from legendary Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones.

Kravitz’s previous participation in the Video Music Awards also includes two notable appearances during the 1998 VMAs. Along with Gwen Stefani (then of No Doubt), he presented Aerosmith with the award for Best Rock Video for their “Pink” and played guitar with Madonna during her performance of “Ray of Light” – the winner of that year’s award for Video of the Year.
