Annual Tribute in Light shines again on the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York

LOWER MANHATTAN (WABC) — The legendary “Tribute in Light” took place again on Wednesday evening to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th.

The art installation will be on display from dusk on Wednesday, September 11, until dawn the next day within a 60-mile radius of Lower Manhattan.

The two beams of light are intended to be reminiscent of the original Twin Towers and have become a symbol with which New Yorkers remember the city’s resilience after the attacks.

“More than 100 million Americans were born since 9/11 or are too young to remember that tragic day, so it is imperative that we inspire a new generation by sharing the unity and resilience of our collective response. The twin beams of Tribute in Light reach high into the night sky to remind everyone who and what we lost – and found – 23 years ago,” said Beth Hillman of the 9/11 Memorial. & Museum President and CEO.

The Tribute in Light was first presented six months after September 11, in March 2002, while rescue, recovery and relief efforts at Ground Zero were still ongoing.

“On September 11, the world turns its eyes to New York City, where the lights that pierce our skyline symbolize our collective memory and our unwavering strength,” said New York Assemblyman Charles Fall. “It is our solemn duty to ensure that these lights continue to shine brightly each year, honoring the lives we have lost and the resilience that defines our city.”
