ORANGE – Three women were hospitalized, one of whom suffered “significant life-threatening injuries” after the car they were in was struck by a tree on Maple Street Friday afternoon, according to Police Chief James Sullivan.

The women were sitting in a car parked in front of 24 Maple Street around 4 p.m. when a tree that Sullivan said was “going to be cut down” fell on the rear of the vehicle, injuring the women in the car.

Sullivan said two of the three women were unresponsive; one of them later regained consciousness when Orange police and firefighters arrived on Maple Street.

“The tree was pulled down by other people in the house before police arrived,” Sullivan reported. “A woman who has a young daughter suffered life-threatening injuries.”

“I don’t think anyone has a clear idea of what injuries (the other two women) have now – although they are not as serious as the other one,” the chief continued.

At around 5:00 p.m., Detective Travis Rushford and Officer Sydney Richardson were at the scene of the accident next to the fallen tree.

At 5:45 p.m., Sullivan said the Massachusetts State Police Investigative Unit was en route to Orange.
