What to watch this weekend, August 9, 2024: TV award contenders

It seems like the 2024 Paris Olympics started only yesterday, but it’s already been two weeks since France reminded the world that its greatest exports have always been art and chaos. The avant-garde opening ceremony on the Seine featured everything from Les Misérables and a metal band jamming with headless Marie Antoinettes to a fashion show and the 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal carry the Olympic torch.

Since then, we have seen world records broken and impressive performances by Athletics like never before. We have cheered comebacks and wept over shattered dreams. But now, as the end of the Summer Games draws near, we turn our attention to Sunday’s closing ceremony (live at 3 p.m. on NBC and Peacock, replay at 7/6c). The Stade de France, which hosted this week’s track and field events, will be the center of the spectacle that Organizers say includes more than “a hundred actors, acrobats, dancers and circus artists.” And if rumors are to be believed, Tom Cruise, as France will officially hand over the Olympic flag to the organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Games. After all, nothing embodies America better than the star of Top Gun: Maverick, which is why this weekend’s Olympics are once again the awards contender to keep an eye on.

However, if you would rather focus your energy elsewhere, the following other candidates are possible:

  • “The Umbrella Academy”: Spend your weekend bingeing the fourth and final season of Netflix’s popular comic book series, which picks up several years after the Hargreeves’ timeline at the end of season three. They’re powerless in this new normal, and while many of them may have wished for that, unfortunately it doesn’t last as strange new enemies force the siblings to come back together for one final, very personal apocalypse. All six episodes are available to stream on Netflix now.
  • “Industry”: HBO’s best-kept secret returns after a two-year hiatus. The corporate drama set in the pressure cooker of London’s investment banking scene is back, with the Emmy-nominated “Barry” star as the new star Sarah Goldberg and “Game of Thrones” Kit Harington to the mix. This time, so-called ethical investing is at the heart of the story, as a sustainable energy startup led by Harington’s rookie is on the verge of an IPO as season three gets underway. The premiere airs Sunday at 9/8c on HBO and Max.
  • “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Chicago Bears”: If you enjoyed spending the offseason with the New York Giants, you’ll probably also enjoy training camp with the Chicago Bears, who are pretty confident after drafting the USC quarterback and 2022 Heisman Trophy winner with their first pick this spring. Caleb Williams in the course of the trade with the former top player from Ohio State Justin Fields about the Pittsburgh Steelers. The first of five episodes is now streaming on Max.
