Sarasota County Republican and Democratic parties react to presidential debate

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Chairs Jack Brill and Daniel Kuether announce their local party’s response to the September 10, 2024 presidential debate.

“The Sarasota County Republican Party was dismayed and outraged by the ABC News moderators’ complete lack of journalistic integrity in yesterday’s debate. They fact-checked a single person, President Donald Trump, five times and even got some wrong. They did not fact-check Kamala Harris once, even as she repeated known and disproven lies, which we quote below. It was a 3-1 ambush and a disgrace to what is left of the journalism profession.

“One caveat the RPOSC must make: The local ABC News 7 affiliate was very fair in contacting both the Republican and Democratic parties to get reactions and request comments. We have taken note of that and greatly appreciate the local professionalism.”

Some example quotes:

  • Harris lied and Trump was right. The “very fine people” statement was debunked by Snopes, but the Democratic moderators who should have known this did NOT fact-check Harris’s statements.

  • Harris lied about the “bloodbath” statement, claiming it was about planned violence in case of his defeat. Even Politifact said it was just about car imports and the quote begins with a question about whether he wins or loses. But the Democratic moderators did NOT fact check Harris’ statements.

  • Trump was right, but the Democratic moderators checked his facts anyway:

Lots of parts, but this is the part Trump was referring to: “In 2019, 89% of municipal police departments — covering about 97% of the population — reported crime data to the FBI. To make up for incomplete data, the FBI will fill in gaps using ‘derived’ statistics, the report said. But as of 2021, fewer than 63% of departments, covering 65% of the population, reported crime data. Several major cities — Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago — reported no crime data at all to the FBI last year.”

Daniel Kuether of the Sarasota County Democratic Party gives their official response.

“Last night, Kamala Harris demonstrated her leadership and presented a vision to move America forward, while Donald Trump, confused and incoherent, failed to offer a real plan for the nation’s future. The American people now face a clear choice: progress with Harris or a return to Trump’s divisiveness and backwardness.”
