NEW YORK (TND) — Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump were seen remembering the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, just hours after the presidential debate.

Before the ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial Plaza in New York City, both presidential candidates shook hands.

President Joe Biden stood between the rivals as they greeted each other surrounded by families, other political leaders and spectators.

A grinning Biden reportedly greeted Trump with a handshake as he and Harris arrived.

Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg appeared to have mediated the greeting between Harris and Trump.

Senators Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) and JD Vance (R-Ohio) also sat in the front row.

Only a little more than twelve hours had passed since the presidential candidates had last seen each other in Pennsylvania.

Supporters could be heard chanting “Kamala” and “Trump” as Democrats and Republicans posed for photos.

Wednesday marks the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist hijacking of the plane in which almost 3,000 people were killed.

If politicians “are interested in what’s really going on, that’s great. Be here,” Korryn Bishop, who lost her cousin John F. McDowell Jr., told the Associated Press. “If they’re just here for their political clout, that annoys me.”

Biden and Harris are expected to attend 9/11 ceremonies in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon, the other sites where terrorists brought down airliners with travelers on board.

Trump and his running mate Vance met with New York City firefighters after the ceremony at Ground Zero.

Trump is then expected at the Flight 93 National Memorial near rural Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
