What is fracking? Trump and Harris reiterate their positions during ABC News presidential debate

PHILADELPHIA– Both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris made their positions on fracking clear during the ABC News debate on Tuesday.

The term is an abbreviation for “hydraulic fracturing,” a process for extracting gas or oil from deep underground by breaking up rock using a high-pressure mixture of water, sand and chemicals.

Pennsylvania is the second largest natural gas producer in the country.

Both candidates claim they would not ban fracking.

Harris was asked about her presidential candidacy in 2019, when she came out strongly in favor of a ban.

“I’m not going to ban fracking,” Harris clarified during the debate. “My position is that we need to invest in diverse energy sources to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.”

“Fracking. She’s been against it for 12 years. She will never allow fracking in Pennsylvania. If she wins the election, it’ll be over on day one,” Trump replied.

U.S. energy statistics show that natural gas and crude oil production reached record monthly highs last year.
