Gina Torres Reacts to ‘Sad’ Cancellation of ‘9-1-1 Lone Star’ (Exclusive)

Gina Torres is sad about the departure of 9-1-1: Lone Star.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at Fox’s fall press day, the actress, who plays paramedic Captain Tommy Vega, reacted to the cancellation of the police series after five seasons.

“Nobody wants that,” she said of the show ending. “Nobody wants to hear that their show has been canceled. It’s sad. Nothing lasts forever, but you just hope it lasts a little longer.”

Although she will no longer see the cast and other “great friends” she met on set every day, Torres said she wants to “still see them, just not in the same capacity.” Suits Alum added that she only has “good” memories of her time at 9-1-1: Lone Star.

“Everyone was so nice, helpful and friendly and did their best at every moment. That’s what I’ll take with me,” she added.

When asked what it was like to play a strong female lead in the series, Torres called the opportunity to portray a “multi-faceted” and “fully fleshed out” character “such a blessing.”

“We’ve seen her at times when she wasn’t necessarily the best, which is great,” she said of Tommy. “She’s been through a lot.”

On Thursday, September 5, Fox announced that the Rob Lowe-directed series will end after its upcoming fifth season, which is scheduled to premiere on September 23.

In a statement, Michael Thorn, president of Fox Television Network, said the final season of the show will give it the “high send-off it deserves, complete with breathless rescues, insurmountable obstacles and relatable personal struggles, thanks to our unparalleled all-star cast led by Rob Lowe and Gina Torres.”

He also thanked the show’s creators, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, whom he called “one of the greatest creative teams in all of television” and whom he credited with “creating one of the most action-packed dramas ever.”

Later that same day, Fox released a new trailer for the upcoming season. While images of explosions and action-packed chases flash across the screen, the cast gave fans a glimpse of what they can expect in the final installment of. 9-1-1: Lonely Star.

“Season five starts with a massive train derailment,” Lowe began, before Torres added, “It’s one of the most amazing experiences on set I’ve had in a long time.”

The cast hinted at the “crazy” circumstances their characters find themselves in. Brian Michael Smith also said that fans can expect to see the beloved characters “get blown up and fly through the air.”

“We thought it was just the train accident, but the danger is still there,” Torres recalled, adding: “There is a gas cloud.”

While the trailer showed clips from Station 126 dealing with what they essentially describe as a “toxic cloud of death,” Ronen Rubinstein called the upcoming season a “perfect combination of extreme rescue missions and extremely dramatic storylines.”

“It’s really just a mystery as to what might happen next,” Lowe said. “I think people are going to love it.”
