Teenager shot by 14-year-old classmate at high school in Nebraska, suspect arrested: police

A 15-year-old boy was shot by his 14-year-old classmate at a Nebraska high school on Tuesday – the latest incident in a series of gun violence cases at U.S. schools this year, authorities said.

At around 12:25 p.m., a gun battle broke out at Omaha Northwest High School, prompting the campus and other schools in the area to be cordoned off.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where he is in stable condition, Omaha Deputy Police Chief Sherie Thomas told reporters in an update Tuesday afternoon. His condition had initially been classified as critical.

The male suspect was arrested outside the school grounds around 1 p.m. following a chase.

“We believe this is an isolated incident between two students,” Thomas said, adding that there is no further danger to the public.

The school’s lockdown was lifted at 1:30 p.m. Students were released room by room and taken to an area near the soccer field, WOWT reported.

At 3 p.m., Omaha Public Schools announced that the majority of students had been reunited with their families at school.

All classes and activities scheduled for Wednesday have been canceled, authorities said. Students will return to classes as usual on Thursday.

“Based on initial information, everyone at the school responded appropriately. We are especially grateful for the quick response of local and state police, who arrived at the scene and arrested a suspect,” Governor Jim Pillen said in a statement.

The 15-year-old victim is in stable condition and is in a nearby hospital, officials said. AP

“We know this has been traumatic for everyone at the school and the parents of Northwest students,” he added.

The shooting occurred less than a week after 14-year-old Colt Gray allegedly gunned down two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in northern Georgia.

Colt and his father Colin Gray, who had bought his son the AR-15-style rifle used in the massacre as a Christmas present, were both arrested and charged with murder.

On Friday, 16-year-old Jaylen Prince allegedly shot and killed his 15-year-old classmate Warren Curtis Grant during a fight in a bathroom at a Maryland high school. The gunman was arrested at a nearby apartment complex after fleeing the school and charged with murder.
