Sean “Diddy” Combs loses $100 million default judgment against Michigan inmate

A Michigan inmate who claims Sean “Diddy” Combs drugged and sexually assaulted him at a party nearly 30 years ago has now won a $100 million default judgment against the hip-hop mogul.

Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith, 51, was awarded the multimillion-dollar default judgment in Lenawee County Circuit Court during a virtual hearing on Monday, Sept. 9, after Combs, 54, failed to appear.

“This man is a convicted felon and sex offender who has been convicted of 14 counts of sexual assault and kidnapping over the past 26 years,” Marc Agnifilo, Combs’ attorney, says in a statement to PEOPLE. “His resume now includes defrauding the courts from prison, as Mr. Combs has never heard of him, let alone been served with a lawsuit. Mr. Combs looks forward to having this conviction quickly overturned.”

Court records show that Cardello-Smith – who is serving a sentence of up to 75 years in prison for first-degree sexual abuse and kidnapping, according to court records – filed a complaint against Combs in June and obtained a temporary restraining order against the controversial star in August.

The Detroit Metro Times reported that the restraining order was sought to prevent Combs from selling assets that could potentially “be used to compensate Cardello-Smith for potential damages.” The outlet also reported that Cardello-Smith has “a long history of challenging the justice system” with lawsuits after teaching himself criminal and civil law while incarcerated.

Cardello-Smith said during a court hearing in August that Combs visited him in prison and offered him $2.3 million if he dismissed the case. Guardian.

He and Combs allegedly met at an after-party at a Holiday Inn in Detroit in 1997 and went to a private hotel room with two women, the complaint says. USA Today.

Combs allegedly touched Cardello-Smith’s buttocks while he was having sex with one of the women and offered him a drink. In the complaint, Cardello-Smith reportedly said he “became drowsy and began to pass out” and later woke up bleeding and in pain. He claims to have reported the incident to police, but it remains unclear what the outcome was.

Combs is currently facing several lawsuits for sexual assault, but he has consistently maintained his innocence.

“No matter how many lawsuits are filed, it will not change the fact that Mr. Combs never sexually harassed or sexually acted against anyone. We live in a world where anyone can file a lawsuit for any reason and without evidence. Fortunately, there is a fair and impartial legal process to find out the truth, and Mr. Combs is confident he will prevail in court against these and other baseless claims,” Diddy’s attorney Jonathan Davis told PEOPLE on Monday, September 9.

In March 2024, his properties were raided by federal agents, which a Homeland Security Investigations representative told PEOPLE was “part of an ongoing investigation.” He listed the home for sale on Sunday, September 8.
