Dallas Cowboys are in the top 5 according to NFL Power Rankings

The first week of the NFL season is officially over, and it was exquisite in every way. It’s extremely difficult to properly evaluate anything after a single week of action, but that by no means means we won’t try.

Like every week, we here at BTB put together our own weekly Power Rankings and look at how the Dallas Cowboys are ranked by media across the internet.

You can view last week’s rankings here.

Let’s go.

1 – Kansas City Chiefs (LW: 1)

It’s really hard to imagine a world where they don’t win everything.

2 – San Francisco 49ers (LW: 2)

You are such a machine. And an unavoidable one at that.

3 – Detroit Lions (LW: 4)

Dan Campbell said after the game that a win was a win. And he was right. Good for them.

4 – Houston Texans (LW: 5)

Even though Anthony Richardson threw for a million yards on what seemed like two throws, they prevailed. Adding Stefon Diggs turned out to be a good idea. Who would have thought!

5 – Dallas Cowboys (LW: 7)

They clearly dominated arguably the best defense in the NFL last year and were able to sit back and relax for most of the second half.

6 – Buffalo Bills (LW: 8)

Sometimes they fly a little closer to the sun, but if they want to turn it on, Josh Allen is great.

7 – Baltimore Ravens (LW: 3)

There were a handful of mistakes that may be the result of Week 1 and all that. We’ll see them soon enough.

8 – Philadelphia Eagles (LW: 10)

The fact that they were able to win even though Jalen Hurts had such an error-prone night is very annoying.

9 – Miami Dolphins (LW: 12)

It’s amazing how Tyreek Hill can shelter you almost at will.

10 – New Orleans Saints (LW: 20)

On offense, they are currently number two in the NFL in terms of EPA/Play.

Remember If the Cowboys will have them under control on Sunday.

11 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers (LW: 17)

You are number one! What?

12 – Los Angeles Rams (LW: 11)

The conversation about Matthew Stafford is annoying at times, but wow, is he good.

13 – Seattle Seahawks (LW: 19)

Maybe we should take them a little more seriously.

14 – Los Angeles Chargers (LW: 18)

The Chargers didn’t ask much of Justin Herbert and won easily. The Jim Harbaugh special.

15 – Minnesota Vikings (LW: 27)

I’m not ready to believe Sam Darnold can actually do that, but it was the first step.

16 – Chicago Bears (LW: 22)

As mentioned in the Detroit case, a win is a win, but we are all ready to see the Caleb Williams experience take off.

17 – Pittsburgh Steelers (LW: 29)

It’s really amazing that the two teams that won in Week 1 without scoring a touchdown were the Bears and the team with Justin Fields at quarterback.

18 – New England Patriots (LW: 31)

That was the biggest surprise of the week for me. Beating the Bengals in Cincinnati is super impressive. Good job, Jerod Mayo. Julian Edelman agreed when I spoke with him this week.

19 – Green Bay Packers (LW: 9)

Of course, it will be a challenge to play without Jordan Love. We’ll see how they do.

20 – Cincinnati Bengals (LW: 6)

It feels like they’re not being pressured enough. They lost. At home. Against a Patriots team we didn’t expect much from. What’s going on?

21 – Indianapolis Colts (LW: 21)

Sign me up for all of Anthony Richardson’s big throws.

22 – Arizona Cardinals (LW: 26)

I’ve rated the Cardinals a little higher than most this season despite last week’s ranking, but they’ll have to win these close games if they want to do something special.

23 – New York Jets (LW: 13)

The Jets are still bad? Who could have predicted that.

24 – Jacksonville Jaguars (LW: 14)

Another team whose losses somehow go unnoticed. Doug Pederson and Trevor Lawrence need to be better.

25 – Washington Commanders (LW: 23)

I hope you have some Jayden Daniels in fantasy. He is so much fun to watch.

26 – Denver Broncos (LW: 24)

Speaking of accountability, will this be the year Sean Payton is held accountable for some?

27 – Atlanta Falcons (LW: 16)

It was a catastrophe. An extreme failure.

28 – Tennessee Titans (LW: 25)

Will Levis has some nice qualities, but you can’t throw the game away like he does.

29 – Las Vegas Raiders (LW: 28)

They are quite boring and dull. It’s really annoying.

30 – Cleveland Browns (LW: 15)

Whoops with a big whoops. What a bad offense and what a bad quarterback.

31 – New York Giants (LW: 30)

Also a bad quarterback.

32 – Carolina Panthers (LW: 32)

A bad, uh, everything.

Further up.

I don’t know if you could have drafted a much better game script for the Cowboys than what happened in Cleveland, all things considered. CeeDee Lamb only needed a handful of practices to make an impact against some of the NFL’s better cornerbacks. Dak Prescott was given a new mega-contract before the game and played a strong first half before the Cowboys resorted to time-stealing measures. Dallas’ defense pressured Deshaun Watson for four quarters when DC Mike Zimmer returned and held the Browns to six Three-and-outs, an interception and a field goal in their first eight possessions. Even the special teams were great, as Brandon Aubrey hit 4 of 4 field goals, including hits from 50 and 57 yards, and my buddy KaVontae Turpin scored a 60-yard punt return TD that made a splash in the first game of the Huntington Bank Field era. Mike McCarthy and Jerry Jones (with the CeeDee and Dak deals finalized) must be feeling a lot better now after the whole thing.

ESPN: 7 (LW: 11)

Another increase.

Pre-season ranking: 11

Best Newcomer Performance: LB DeMarvion shown too much

There were plenty of opportunities thanks to Dallas’ big win, but Overshown gets the nod. He sat out his rookie season with a torn ACL in his left knee, but was all over the field against the Browns. He finished the season with nine tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss and two quarterback hits. His final speed was eye-opening on his sack of Browns QB Deshaun Watson, as he beat Micah Parsons to the signal-caller. There may be some teething issues as the year goes on, but he’s off to a great start. — Todd Archer

Note: ESPN didn’t have concrete power rankings at the start of Week 1, so we went with what they had at the time for our rankings from a week ago. That had the Cowboys ranked No. 6, but they decided to list “last week’s” ranking as their preseason ranking for the team, which is 11, and we adjusted things accordingly.

USA Today: 7 (LW: 18)

I guess the number 18 was maybe just a bit low!

Let’s give them their flowers after they made a last-minute deal to sign QB Dak Prescott. But the real story Sunday was the defense, a unit now led by Mike Zimmer that generated 25 pressures on Cleveland’s 56 dropbacks.

Yahoo: 4 (LW: 5)

Among the top five.

When we freak out about the Cowboys next offseason (and everyone will, it’s an annual tradition), remember how the last few months have played out. Predictions of doom and gloom, then the Cowboys go on the road and crush a talented Browns team in Week 1. It looked like a team that has won 12 games each of the last three seasons.

CBS Sports: 6 (LW: 10)

Right out here.

They signed Dak Prescott to a big deal on Sunday and then swept the Browns. The defense was special that day, which may be a sign of things to come.

The athlete: 7 (LW: 7)

No change.

Dak Prescott won the day on Sunday. Not just in the NFL, but in the world. No one had a better day than the Cowboys quarterback. Hours before the game, Prescott signed a six-year contract that guarantees him $231 million and makes him the first player in league history to earn $60 million per season. Then he went out and played a very Dak-like game – efficient but not spectacular, completing 19 of 32 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown. That was enough to beat an already struggling Cleveland team.

Sports illustrated: 9 (LW: 11)

This is the lowest ranking for the Cowboys of the retail outlets we support.

Good for the Cowboys, who continue to be blessed with injured doves to attack early in the season. Last year it was the Giants, Jets and Patriots over a four-game span. This year it’s the completely out-of-shape Deshaun Watson and a pair of backup tackles for the Browns. That shouldn’t take away from Mike Zimmer’s different, but still creative, game plan, which marked his glorious return to football with six sacks of Deshaun Watson.

Dallas Cowboys movement week by week

Each week (at the suggestion of you, the wonderful BTBers), we will update this chart to track how the Cowboys have performed in the Power Rankings according to each media outlet we cover.

Sorry for the inverted look. If anyone is a Google Sheets expert and knows how to flip it (we’ve tried many different ways), please let us know in the comments, but of course, in this context, the further down you are, the better.
