Someone has completely animated the “cursed” Minecraft movie trailer and it’s so much better
What you need to know
- Last week we saw the first trailer for “A Minecraft Movie” starring Jack Black and Jason Mamoa. The film will be released on April 5, 2025.
- The CGI trailer received mixed reviews from fans and garnered over 1 million dislikes on YouTube.
- Someone remade the trailer as a fully animated adventure, and it looks great. The comments have been overwhelmingly positive.
It’s only been a few days since Warner Brothers released the first trailer for A Minecraft Movie, complete with its cursed creatures that wouldn’t be out of place in a Skibidi Toilet crossover episode. Just kidding, my son absolutely loved the trailer, but he also loves Skibidi Toilet…
Whatever the case, the response to the trailer has been notoriously mixed, and it’s received 1.4 million dislikes on YouTube (for those who have the extension installed that lets you watch it). Fans have compared the reveal to the first look at the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, where fan sentiment famously led to a delay and redesign of the main character. Today, a 3D artist on YouTube shared his reimagined version of the trailer as a fully animated affair, and it actually changes the tone quite a bit. Below, you can check out Alumio’s take on “A Minecraft Movie,” which we think is pretty awesome.

The response to the animation is consistently positive
Posted on YouTube with the simple comment: “We didn’t like how the official movie looked so we remade it,” Alumio’s video is already gathering a lot of likes, with over 2 million views and 255,000 likes so far. The comments range from “Guys, this is the real official Minecraft trailer. Nobody can convince me otherwise.” to “It’s crazy that even though I don’t like the dialogue, that’s still 100x more adorable.”
Overall, people like it, and it seems that the format of being animated in the actual style of Minecraft changes the overall tone of the trailer from somewhat awkward to genuinely funny. Here are some side-by-side shots of the “cursed” Minecraft movie and the animated Minecraft movie.

The jury is divided on “A Minecraft Movie”
Before I even saw the social media reaction to the Minecraft movie trailer, I had already seen it with my son (4) and he absolutely loved the original trailer. While I did find the reveal that Jack Black is… just Jack Black calling himself Steve a little odd and that Llama gave me the creeps in the worst possible way, I’m not the target audience for this film – my Skibidi toilet and Blippi-loving son definitely is.
However, I like the animated version much better in comparison with its simple charm, and for a children’s film to be truly successful, you have to woo the adults too, after all, it’s our money that brings the Skibidi little ones to the cinema! I will no doubt still watch the film when it hits cinemas in April 2025, but the reception of the film as a whole will be the deciding factor as to whether I spend money on it in the cinema or wait until it comes out on streaming platforms.
