Lawsuit means Kansas City-based Mission Taco is now called Session Taco

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – Taco Tuesday will soon sound very different at a popular Kansas City restaurant.

Mission Taco Joint will be known as Session Taco.

The owners said they are making the name change after a company called Gruma Corporation, the parent company of Mission Foods, sued the chain for trademark infringement.

The owners said they chose Session Taco in the future because Session represents what they love.

“Growing up, we were just beach rats. Our dad’s job with the Coast Guard meant we moved around a lot, but after living in San Diego three times, we fell in love with the sights, sounds and food. We spent our days skating, surfing and hanging out on the boardwalk, and those experiences inspired Mission Taco Joint. Now, with Session Taco, we can get even more into that. Session represents a lot of the things we love – skate session, surf session, jam session – all accessible, relaxed, fun and connecting experiences, and that’s how we want our guests to feel, too,” said owner Adam Tilford.

The transition to the new identity will take place slowly over the coming months, said Tilford, and the transition should be completed by the end of the year.

“Session Taco is a new chapter for us and an opportunity to bring new energy to the menu and our team. We’ll be adding some lighter, coastal dishes like Baja tuna ceviche and lobster tacos, as well as some dishes we keep getting asked about like a crispy taco (the regular taco), burrito bowl, Caesar salad and more,” said owner Jason Tilford.
