Kevin Costner remembers ‘Field of Dreams’ co-star James Earl Jones

Field of Dreams brought magic to the screen and James Earl Jones’ performance alongside Kevin Costner was an essential ingredient.

In a tribute to Jones, who died on Monday, September 9, at the age of 93, Costner recalled playing alongside Jones’ magical presence in the 1989 baseball classic.

“That booming voice. That quiet strength. The kindness that he exuded. There is so much to say about his legacy, so I will just say how grateful I am that a part of it Field of Dreams,” Costner, 69, wrote alongside a slideshow of stills from the film.

“Anyone who has seen the film knows that he would not be the same with anyone else in his role. Only he could bring that kind of magic to a film about baseball and an Iowa cornfield. I am grateful to have witnessed him create that magic,” Costner continued. “Rest in peace, my friend.”

Field of Dreams Coster plays Ray Kinsella, an Iowa farmer who has visions that inspire him to build a baseball field in a cornfield. During his quest, Ray meets Terence Mann, the disillusioned writer played by Jones. Based on WP Kinsella’s novella Shoeless JoeThe film was a box office hit and received three Academy Award nominations. It was added to the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry in 2017.

One of the film’s turning points comes when Jones delivers a famous monologue about the importance of baseball, leading to the film’s famous line.

“America passed us by like an army of steamrollers. It was wiped out like a chalkboard, rebuilt and wiped out again. But baseball marked time,” says Jones’ Terence. “This field, this game… it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of everything that was once good and could be good again. Oh, the people will come, Ray. The people will definitely come.”

Jones has appeared in countless classic films, including another successful baseball film in 1993. The sandbank. He was also the voice of Darth Vader in star Wars Movies and Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion KingJones was a member of the EGOT Club and received an honorary Oscar, three Tony Awards, a Grammy Award and three Emmy Awards.

Jones died at his home in Dutchess County, New York, his agent told PEOPLE. He is survived by his son, Flynn Earl Jones. His wife, Cecilia Hart, died in October 2016.
