DirecTV customers remain in the dark about Jets-49ers on “MNF” as dispute with Disney continues

An important milestone has been reached in the cold war between Disney and DirecTV.

When the Jets’ game against the 49ers began airing on Monday Night Football on ESPN and ABC, the networks’ parent company, Disney, had still not reached a broadcast agreement with DirecTV.

The dispute involves the ESPN family of networks, FX and the Disney-operated ABC subsidiaries.

While the majority of DirecTV customers nationwide can still watch “Monday Night Football” on ABC this week, major metropolitan areas like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston and San Francisco, where Disney owns the broadcast stations, are going dark.

All DirecTV customers will not be able to use their accounts to stream games broadcast on ESPN through the network’s app.

Since last weekend, the satellite and streaming services of DirecTV and U-Verse have been unavailable.

While many sports fans can subscribe to a streaming package like YouTube TV, Sling TV or Fubo, either switching entirely or simply keeping both until the broadcast dispute is over, switching isn’t that easy for everyone.

DirecTV has a large commercial customer base in bars, restaurants, hotels and gyms and is also one of the few television providers for people in extremely rural areas who do not have adequate cable access in their residential areas.

The fans were not happy as the argument continued into Monday night.

X-user Steven Barnes urged both companies to “finally figure it out!!!!”

Another user posted a photo of a dimmed TV and asked: “Is this a fucking joke?!?!?!”

By the end of August, it was clear that the deadlock between the companies could also affect the football season. This manifested itself on September 1, when the Disney channels were shut down and sports fans had to miss the highly anticipated college football matchup between USC and LSU as well as the US Open.

Last weekend, many college football games as well as the women’s and men’s finals of the US Open were uneventful.

On Saturday night, DirecTV filed a complaint with the FCC, alleging that Disney negotiated in bad faith.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the dispute is essentially about how much Disney charges for its package of channels and “DirecTV’s desire for more freedom in how it puts together and sells Disney channels to subscribers.” This means whether, for example, ESPN could be priced at tiers that make it easier for non-sports fans to subscribe to entertainment channels without having to pay extra.
