Green River Killer taken to King County Jail after transfer to state prison

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate “possibly related cases”

Gary Ridgway, the Green River Killer, was admitted to the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle on Monday, September 9, following his transfer from the state prison in Walla Walla.

Few details have been released about why Ridgway is back in King County, although it may be another murder case. He is serving 49 consecutive life sentences for murder.

“Since Gary Ridgway’s arrest in 2001 in connection with the Green River murder investigation, the King County Sheriff’s Office continues to actively investigate potentially related cases,” a sheriff’s office spokesman said when asked why Ridgway is in custody in King County.

The spokesman did not provide further details or say whether the sheriff’s office might open another murder case against Ridgway. The King County District Attorney’s Office referred all media questions to the sheriff’s office.

According to prison records, Ridgway was booked into the county jail. Such a booking means he must be transferred to state custody. State Department of Corrections records list Ridgway as an inmate at the state prison in Walla Walla.

Detectives with the King County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ridgway in 2001 based on DNA evidence that linked him to four of the 49 murders that began in 1982 and ended in 1998. Ridgway is serving 49 life sentences without the possibility of parole. He strangled each of his victims.

Investigators believe he may have killed up to 65 to 70 women.
