Miami Police release footage of Tyreek Hill being arrested by police

Top line

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was briefly detained and handcuffed by police near the team’s Hard Rock Stadium following a traffic accident Sunday morning before being released and attending Sunday’s game. The Miami-Dade Police Department subsequently launched an investigation, placed an officer on administrative duty and released bodycam footage of the incident.

Key data

According to NFL Network, Hill was stopped for a minor traffic accident as he entered the stadium grounds; ESPN reported he was stopped for speeding and reckless driving.

ESPN reported, citing unnamed sources, that Hill was handcuffed after a verbal altercation with police.

Hill received a ticket for a traffic violation, his agent Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN. He called the police’s handling of the case “heartbreaking” and “unbelievable.”

“Several teammates witnessed the incident and stopped to offer assistance,” the Dolphins said in a tweet, adding that all players involved are available for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Among Hill’s teammates involved in the incident was Dolphins defensive tackle Calais Campbell, who was also taken into police custody before Sunday’s game, the Miami Herald reported.

Rosenhaus reportedly said on NFL Network on Sunday that he thought Hill would “clear his head, calm down and get through it,” and Hill did indeed play in Sunday’s game, scoring an 80-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

The Miami-Dade Police Department said Sunday that an internal investigation had been launched and that one of the officers involved in the incident had been “placed on administrative duties for the duration of the investigation.”

In a released clip of body camera footage – which, according to the Miami Herald, lasts nearly two hours – Hill can be seen being dragged from his car and brought to the ground after an apparent argument with police officers because his window was rolled up.

Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie Daniels said in a statement Monday that the footage was released to “reaffirm the police department’s commitment to keeping the public informed” and that the investigation was ongoing.

Main critics

Rosenhaus reportedly told NFL Network, “This shouldn’t happen to a player entering his own stadium” and “there is no reason why Tyreek should be treated this way.” He added that they will investigate the incident further after the game.

Important background

Hill has been with the Dolphins since 2022 and previously played for the Kansas City Chiefs for six seasons. Hill has had legal troubles in the past: In 2014, Hill was kicked off the Oklahoma State University football team after pleading guilty to domestic violence and assault for attacking his then-pregnant fiancée, the Miami Herald reported. His conviction was expunged in 2018, but Hill was investigated again in 2019 after his 3-year-old son broke his arm and child welfare investigators removed the child from Hill’s custody. The Kansas City Star reported that prosecutors believed a crime had been committed against the child but could not prove who did it, so no charges were filed against Hill.

tangent

Some fans compared Hill’s arrest before Sunday’s game to the arrest of PGA player Scottie Scheffler, who was arrested earlier this year as he drove onto the grounds of the PGA Championship. The charges against Scheffler – including one count of assault on a police officer and three other misdemeanors – were eventually dropped.
