Cade York released by the Commanders after missing two field goals in the opening game

The Washington Commanders are once again looking for a kicker. The Commanders released Cade York three weeks after his trade and one day after he missed two field goals in a season-opening loss.

Washington traded a conditional seventh-round pick for York from Cleveland, but since he was out of the roster for two games, the Commanders do not have to give up the pick.

York missed the right end from 56 and 47 yards in the 37-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Washington is expected to sign experienced Austin Seibert as a replacement, a source confirmed to ESPN. Seibert has made 45 of 56 field goal attempts in his career.

The Athletic was the first to report on Seibert’s signing.

Washington allowed Joey Slye to leave as a free agent; he now plays for New England. The Commanders signed Brandon McManus in March but released him in May after two women filed a lawsuit against him alleging sexual harassment on a team plane while he was playing for Jacksonville last season.

The lawsuit was dismissed because it did not meet the criteria of an “exceptional case,” which allows the women to file the case anonymously.

Washington also signed Ramiz Ahmed in June and Riley Patterson in August. Ahmed was waived in training camp and Patterson was released after the team signed York.

“It’s certainly not ideal, but it shows that when things aren’t right, you can’t just sit there,” Washington coach Dan Quinn said. “We’re going to get through it. I’m disappointed … but we owe it to everyone to keep fighting.”

Cleveland drafted York in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, but he is now looking for his fifth organization. As a rookie, he made 24 of 32 kicks for the Browns but did not attempt another kick in a game until Sunday.
