Apple announces the iPhone 16 Pro

Apple announced the iPhone 16 Pro series at its product event on Monday.

The company’s new flagship smartphones have slightly larger screens on both models: 6.3 inches on the iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9 inches on the iPhone 16 Pro Max (versus 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, respectively). The phones’ bodies are again made of titanium. It’s available in four colors: black, white, natural, and a new “desert titanium.” Apple also claims that the iPhone 16 Pro Max has “the best iPhone battery life ever.”

The iPhone 16 Pro lineup features the A18 Pro chip, which has a 16-core Neural Engine and is said to offer “amazing performance” for Apple Intelligence features, including 15 percent faster performance than the iPhone 15 Pro. It also has improved graphics performance thanks to a 6-core GPU that’s 20 percent faster than the iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 Pro.

The iPhone 16 Pro features a 48MP Fusion Camera, a new 48MP Ultra Wide camera, and a 12MP 5x Telephoto camera – which on the regular iPhone 16 Pro features the tetraprism design that was exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 range also features the iPhone 16 range’s new camera control button, and Apple says the button will get a two-stage shutter button as part of a software update later this year. Apple is introducing new photo styles, and you can change the styles in your photos after you take them. The iPhone 16 Pro can also record 4K video at 120 frames per second, and you can adjust the playback speed in the Photos app after you shoot.

Apple is also touting improved audio hardware on the iPhone 16 Pro, including four “studio-quality” microphones. You can also record spatial audio when you’re shooting spatial video. And in an update to Voice Memos coming later this year, you’ll be able to layer a track over a recording, which could be useful if you’re recording music.

The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 with 128GB of storage, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at $1199 with 256GB of storage. You can pre-order the new Pro phones on Friday, September 13, and they will be available on September 20.

Apple is launching these new phones as it pushes into AI with its Apple Intelligence features, some of which are set to be available in beta in October. (The company claims that all of its new iPhones this year are designed “from the ground up” with Apple Intelligence in mind.) As with other tech companies, AI is a focus at Apple this year, and the company has already unveiled several AI-powered tools at its recent Worldwide Developers Conference, including an improved Siri and integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
