New York Jets vs. San Francisco 49ers odds, expert picks, how to watch: Aaron Rodgers is back, but the Niners are the favorites for Monday Night Football
Monday Night Football kicks off 2024 with a thrilling matchup as the San Francisco 49ers host the New York Jets. After losing in last season’s Super Bowl, the 49ers will be looking to avoid disappointment. If four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers stays healthy, the Jets also believe they are a contender. The 49ers are favorites to defeat the Jets and complete the Week 1 schedule.
San Francisco’s roster is full of luxuries. Brock Purdy was the NFL’s most efficient passer last season (113 QB rating), and now that Brandon Aiyuk has signed a contract extension to get back on the field, it has its three favorite receivers back. The trio of Aiyuk, receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. and tight end George Kittle remain a nightmare when it comes to game planning.
Reigning Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey is behind Purdy at running back, but may not play in the opener due to ongoing injury issues (calf/Achilles). He was limited in practice last week and was questionable for Saturday’s game.
The Niners defense ranked third in points allowed (17.5) and eighth in yards allowed per game (303.9) last season and has new faces, as defensive end Arik Armstead is headed to Jacksonville and linebacker Dre Greenlaw (Achilles) begins the season on the bench. Nick Bosa and Co. still have enough returning talent to maintain a top-10 defense.
For the Jets, Rodgers played four offensive snaps in 2023 before a torn Achilles tendon ended his season. The Jets’ passers had a QB rating of 70.5 after Rodgers’ absence, the lowest in the league. A revamped offensive line and emerging playmakers are creating optimism in New York. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall could have All-Pro seasons if Rodgers can get back to form.
Even though Rodgers is rusty, defense remains the backbone of New York. Pro Football Focus ranked the Jets No. 1 in their group rankings for defensive line, linebackers and secondary this offseason.
