PWHL Boston becomes Boston Fleet: Check out the other team names

Say goodbye to PWHL Boston and hello to the Boston Fleet.

After an inaugural season featuring six teams known only by the cities they represented, the PWHL finally announced nicknames and brand identities for its franchises Monday morning.

Besides the fleet, the other team names are:

  • The New York Sirens
  • The Minnesota Frost
  • The Montreal Victoire
  • The Toronto Sceptres
  • The Ottawa Cargo

Boston captain Hilary Knight appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Monday to announce the team names along with Amy Scheer, PWHL vice president of business operations.

“The fans have been telling us since day one that they want conventional team names,” Scheer said. “They’ve told us a few things. The names have to be bold, the names have to be confident, they have to be strong, and you better make sure they have a connection to the city and the state.”

“We hope we’ve accomplished that with these names, and we can’t wait to see our fans bring these names to life.”

Despite the lack of a unique brand identity, it was a fairly successful first season for the PWHL; all teams wore nearly identical jerseys, differing mainly in color.

“From my perspective, it’s not that bad,” said Danielle Marmer, general manager of Boston’s PWHL team, before last season. “We see on social media that there are rumors about the names, and I think that happens in every market, but we’re not too worried about it. Whatever name we ultimately decide on, I think our fans will support it.”
