Charlotte woman sleeps on $1 million lottery ticket to keep it safe

RALEIGH, NC (WBTV) – A Charlotte woman can fulfill her dream of owning a home after winning $1 million in the lottery, the North Carolina Education Lottery announced.

Arely Mayorga Martinez said her husband bought the $10 “Multiplier Mania” lottery ticket at Shopton Commons BP on Steele Creek Road in Charlotte and took it home for her to scratch off.

“We are so happy,” she said. “I couldn’t believe what I saw.”

When Martinez realized her ticket had a $1 million prize, she decided to keep it in a safe place until she could claim her prize.

“We hid it under our mattress,” she said.

When Martinez arrived at lottery headquarters on Thursday, she had a decision to make. She could choose whether to receive her winnings as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or as a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum of $600,000 and took home $429,003 after required state and federal taxes were deducted.

Multiplier Mania launched in June 2023 with six top prizes of $1 million. One $1 million prize has yet to be claimed.
