Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams earns SNF game ball with his performance against Los Angeles Rams

When Stafford called “heads” during the coin toss in overtime and the coin came up “tails,” Lions quarterback Jared Goff responded confidently: “We’re taking the ball.”

Perhaps it was a small foretaste of what was to come, because this game-winning touchdown drive in overtime was a masterpiece for the Lions’ offense.

It started with a pass from Kalif Raymond for 12 yards. Then came a handoff to David Montgomery from right end for 21 yards to the LA 37-yard line. Montgomery got another handoff, this time from the left tackle, and gained another nine yards.

A 10-yard pass to Jahmyr Gibbs gave the Lions 1st & 10 at LA’s 28-yard line before the Rams defense even knew what hit them. A short three-yard run by Gibbs was followed by runs by Montgomery of six and eight yards, respectively, that set up a 1st & Goal at the one-yard line. From there, all it took was a handoff to Montgomery to tie the game.

“Yeah, it was good. You just have to give it to D-Mo, man, a battering ram,” Goff said of the overtime drive. “You just have to give it to him and he did the rest and it was fun. It was fun to watch him – he kind of got his second wind in overtime, and so did our O-line.”

“I was joking with him when we called the play at the one-yard line. It was like saying, ‘That’s a goal.’ There was no doubt about it – and he put the ball in, which was great.”

Montgomery had a great training camp, finishing Sunday with 91 yards on 17 carries, a 5.4 yards per carry average and the game-winning touchdown. It was a drive that showed what this offense is capable of when 11 players are on a line and imposing their will on the defense.
