Things got heated late in the Los Angeles Chargers’ 22-10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday afternoon.

Shortly after a failed 2-point conversion at SoFi Stadium, players from both teams were involved in a lengthy scrum in the back of the end zone that lasted for some time. Players and coaches from both teams ran to break up the incident, which apparently started between Chargers receiver Joshua Palmer and Raiders cornerback Jack Jones.

Both Palmer and Jones were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct and sent off.

It’s unclear what sparked the altercation. The Chargers attempted to convert the 2-point conversion by passing the ball to Gus Edwards, but he was stopped. Palmer and Jones were in the back of the end zone, off the play.

The 2-point conversion was achieved after a short throw from quarterback Justin Herbert to rookie Ladd McConkey, who fought his way into the end zone with a sideways step and scored his first touchdown. This gave the Chargers a 22-10 lead at the end of the fourth quarter and secured their season-opening victory.

Gardner Minshew completed 25 of 33 passes for 257 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Raiders. He scored a touchdown on a 31-yard throw to Alexander Mattison in the first quarter. Zamir White added 44 rushing yards on 13 carries and Jakobi Meyers had 61 receiving yards on three catches for the Raiders.

Herbert completed 17 of 26 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown in the Chargers’ win. JK Dobbins had 135 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, leading the team, and McConkey had 39 receiving yards on five catches.

After a very slow first half, the Chargers went into halftime trailing 7-6, but scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to secure the win, the first under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, who earned the victory after leading Michigan to the college football national title last season.
