Patricia Arquette to star in scripted Murdaugh family series at Hulu

Patricia Arquette will star in Hulu’s miniseries about the Murdaugh family. diversity has learned.

The show’s development at Hulu was first reported in November 2022. With Arquette cast, the series has now officially been commissioned.

According to the official description, the series is based on the incredible family drama of Maggie (Arquette) and Alex Murdaugh, a gripping account based on countless hours of research by Mandy Matney – journalist and creator of the popular ‘Murdaugh Murders Podcast’ – as well as exclusive insider knowledge from the years she has followed the case.”

The Murdaugh family was a powerful figure in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina and wielded great legal and political influence. Yet for nearly a decade, the family has been accused of involvement in a range of crimes, from fraud to murder. In addition to the Murdaugh Murders podcast, they have been the subject of several documentaries and news specials.

Michael D. Fuller and Erin Lee Carr are co-creators and executive producers of the untitled series, with Fuller also set to serve as showrunner. Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund will executive produce under their Eat the Cat banner, with Matney also serving as an executive producer. The studio is UCP. Antosca and Eat the Cat currently have an overall deal with UCP.

This role marks Arquette’s return to a true crime series with Eat the Cat, UCP and Hulu. She previously worked with all three in the miniseries “The Act,” for which Arquette won the Emmy and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries for her role as Dee Dee Blanchard.

Arquette has also been nominated for an Emmy in recent years for her roles in the Showtime series “Escape at Dannemora” (for which she also won a Golden Globe) and “Severance” on Apple TV+. She previously won the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama for her leading role in “Medium.” In film, Arquette won the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for “Boyhood” and has starred in films such as “True Romance,” “Bringing Out the Dead,” “Stigmata” and “Lost Highway.”

She is represented by Gersh, 3 Arts Entertainment and Goodman Genow.
