Jerod Mayo of the New England Patriots ignores news about Bill Belichick

Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick caused quite a stir when he joined Instagram. After all, it doesn’t seem to fit Belichick’s style to be present on social media.

And what does Jerod Mayo think about the situation? He doesn’t seem to think much about it.

When asked about Belichick’s decision to start an Instagram account, Mayo responded in the style of Belichick himself.

“I’ve heard some of the guys talk about it, but I’m not going to talk about it,” Mayo said on the Patriots’ official YouTube account.

Mayo chuckled slightly at the end of his statement before leaving the press conference, but it was certainly a cool response.

Maybe Mayo just doesn’t want to discuss anything Belichick-related, since Belichick spent the last 24 seasons as New England’s head coach. It’s a new era in Foxborough, and understandably, Mayo wants to move forward.

Mayo played eight seasons as a linebacker for the Patriots under Belichick from 2008-2015, making several Pro Bowl appearances and being named a First-Team All-Pro selection. Unfortunately, he was injured during the Patriots’ run to the Super Bowl victory in the 2013-14 season.

A few years after retiring from the NFL, the 38-year-old took a job as New England’s inside linebackers coach in 2019, a job he held throughout last season before being named Belichick’s successor.

Mayo definitely has a lot of work ahead of him.

The Pats have fallen on hard times, missing the playoffs in three of the last four seasons and finishing 29-36 during that time. In 2023, they finished just 4-13, their worst record since 1992.

There is a general consensus that the Patriots are in last place in the AFC East and will be one of the worst teams in the league this year, so Mayo could still pull through in the early going.

However, things are expected to at least move in a positive direction, so we will see if Mayo can turn things around this season.

New England will open its regular season this Sunday on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals.
