Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints odds, expert tips, how to watch: Saints are favorites at home in the Dome

Normally, a team with two wins in a Week 1 matchup would be a retroactive loser, but as the 2024 season begins, the Panthers may show more promise than the Saints, who look less than mediocre on paper. However, the NFC South, where both teams play, is a weak division, and the Saints are favorites at home in the Dome.

It’s the second season of the Bryce Young era for the Panthers. The honeymoon period he enjoyed is now over. As a rookie, he completed less than 60 percent of his passes and had an 11-10 touchdown-interception ratio. Young will face an improved but still average Saints defense. That could be just what he and young receivers Jonathan Mingo and Xavier Legette need to get in the end zone.

It’s also the first season for Carolina’s Dave Canales, who is making his debut as head coach. Canales is a protégé of Pete Carroll. In his only season as OC, Canales had mixed results and he’s never coached a young quarterback before. The Panthers are trusting a rookie coach to bring together young talent on offense.

Someone told the Saints it would be a good idea to pin their hopes on veteran quarterback Derek Carr, a Raiders dropout who has only one playoff game (a loss) in his 10-year NFL career. The 33-year-old is serviceable and doesn’t often make mistakes, but the only season in which he caught more than 30 touchdown passes was nearly a decade ago. His targets in New Orleans are wide receiver Chris Olave (1,123 yards on 87 catches in 2023) and below-average wide receiver Rashid Shaheed.
