MLS weekend preview: Analysis of the best games ahead of the weekend

Our football betting expert offers his tips and predictions for this weekend’s selected MLS games.

The USA may be in action on Saturday night as they face Canada in a friendly, but that didn’t stop MLS from putting on a show of their own.

In addition to the international matches on Saturday evening, six more matches will take place.

Although some top teams have been unable to play due to call-ups, the games that have taken place are still of amazing value.

MLS betting tips for the weekend

  • Chicago Fire vs DC United: Christian Benteke, anytime goalscorer @ +160
  • New York Red Bulls vs Sporting Kansas City: Sporting Kansas City wins @ +400
  • New England Revolution vs St. Louis City: Over 3.5 goals @ +175

Benteke leads the field

Christian Benteke is the MLS’s top scorer this season, tied with Real Salt Lake’s Cristian Arango with 17 goals. He achieved this despite playing one fewer game than Arango, and he betters his xG of 15.92.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Fire are struggling defensively. In the 27 league games so far this season, they have conceded 48 goals, including 8 in the last three games alone.

While the +500 odds on Benteke to be the first scorer are tempting, it’s safer to bet on him to score anytime against one of the most porous defenses in MLS.

Kansas City ready for the surprise

Based on the league standings, this should be an easy win for the New York Red Bulls. They are in 4th place in the East, while Sporting Kansas City are a distant 12th in the West.

However, the form table tells a different story.

The Red Bulls are struggling and have only won one of their last seven games. In addition to five draws, they recently lost 2-0 to Philadelphia Union.

Kansas City, on the other hand, is on a rebound. They have won three of their last five games, tied another and lost just once, including a 3-0 win in their last game against the Orlando Magic, who are just five points behind New York in the East.

New York is the better team overall, but Kansas City is the hottest favorite with inflated odds due to its poor position in the league.

Goals galore in New England

Neither the New England Revolution nor St. Louis City had a memorable season, with both teams finishing 13th in their respective divisions.

This is mainly because both teams conceded too many goals to get results. The Revolution conceded 49 in their 25 games played, while Kansas conceded 52 in 27 games.

However, this means that their games usually feature a lot of goals.

New England has scored more than 3.5 goals in three of its last five games, and Kansas City has also scored above that mark in three of its last six games.

Kansas City has also been impressive in front of goal, scoring 44 goals so far this year, a comparable number to teams contending for the playoffs.

Since both teams appear very weak defensively and Kansas City has considerable goal-scoring potential, more than 3.5 goals are likely to be scored in this game as well.

MLS Betting Tip 3: Over 3.5 goals @ +175 at bet365
