Jackson Arnold explains how Oklahoma joining the SEC affected his recruitment

Oklahoma Sooners DOMINATE Temple! | Jackson Arnold, Deion Burks WORK, Brent Venables defense RAVES!

The opportunity to compete in the SEC was an important reason Jackson-Arnold committed to play for Oklahoma. The former five-star prospect pledged to play for the Sooners in January 2022 after it was already announced that they planned to leave the Big 12.

Now he begins his first year as starting quarterback in Norman, which will also be OU’s first season in the SEC. The Paul Finebaum Show On Tuesday, Arnold explained that he grew up watching the SEC and hoped to play there one day.

“I actually got recruited when there was talk of OU joining the SEC,” he said. “So for me, it was kind of a recruiting effort. I was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and I spent the first 10 years of my life there. So I grew up watching SEC football. I grew up watching those teams. So for me, knowing I was going to join a team that was going to play in the SEC was pretty special.”

Arnold later moved to Texas and played high school football for Guyer High School in Denton. He was the No. 8 player overall and No. 4 quarterback in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that takes into account all four major recruiting media companies.

In the season opener against Temple, he showed off the talent that earned him so much recognition out of high school. Arnold threw for 141 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone as the Sooners stormed to a 51-3 victory over the Owls.

Of course, the competition will get a lot more once SEC play begins, and Arnold knows this, having watched the conference as a kid. His play will be a major factor in determining how well Oklahoma does in its first year as a member of the league.

Fortunately, Arnold still has a few non-conference games left to warm up and improve chemistry with his receivers before SEC play begins. The Sooners’ first conference game is at home against Tennessee on Sept. 28, and it’s safe to assume the quarterback will be ready for it.
