“Numerous people” were shot in a shooting spree on Interstate 75 near Exit 49 north of London, Kentucky, the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday evening.

The sheriff’s office said the highway was closed near the exit, which is 9 miles north of London.

Police responded to reports that a suspect had fired shots at motorists from an overpass or a wooded area, several media reports said.

Reuters reported that police are still searching for the suspect.

London, about 80 miles south of Lexington, Kentucky, has a population of 7,600.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear urged people to avoid the area.

“Kentucky, we are aware of a shooting on I-75 in Laurel County,” Beshear said. “Police have closed the interstate at exit 49 in both directions. Please avoid the area. We will provide more details as they become available.”

The governor said he was receiving updates from the Kentucky State Police and the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security. “Together, we are actively monitoring the situation and offering assistance in any way possible. Please pray for everyone involved,” he wrote.

The highway is closed between exits 41 and 59, FOX 56 reported, citing the Kentucky Department of Transportation.

London Mayor Randall Weddle also asked people to avoid the area on his Facebook page.

Karen Kelly, chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, also wrote on Twitter that she had “heard reports of an active shooter on I75 between exits 49 and 41. Highway closed. Shooter in the woods. Pray.”
