WMU heads out to face two top-ranked opponents

KALAMAZOO, Michigan – The Western Michigan volleyball team is on the road for the first time in 2024 this weekend, traveling to Milwaukee to face two highly ranked opponents: Kansas (No. 13) and Marquette (No. 24).

THE FIRST SERVE
Western Michigan is on the road for the first time in 2024 this weekend, heading to Milwaukee to face #13 Kansas and #24 Marquette. The Broncos had a 12-2 record in true road games in 2023 and a 5-1 record on neutral sites.

THE OPPONENTS
Kansas enters the weekend 4-0, having dropped just one set in its first four matches. WMU has a 1-3 overall record against the Jayhawks, having last met in 2000. Marquette enters the weekend 1-1 after losing to #5 Stanford on Wednesday. Western Michigan has a 5-4 lead overall, with MU winning the last meeting in 2012. The Jayhawks and Golden Eagles meet Friday night to open the weekend.

WMU AGAINST BIG COMPETITION
Western Michigan hasn’t played a team from the Big 12 since facing Oklahoma in 2013. The Broncos have won their last three games against Big East opponents, including a four-set victory over Villanova last year. WMU has two opportunities to earn its first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 18 Ohio State on Sept. 5, 2003.

OPENING WEEKEND SUMMARY
The Broncos opened the season with a 2-1 win in their annual home tournament, beating LMU and Loyola Chicago in four sets before losing the final to Clemson in four sets on Sunday. Setter Logan case (12.00 assists/set) and Libero Andelyn Simkins (4.75 digs/set) were the Western Michigan representatives in the All-Tournament Team of the weekend.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After earning 11 MAC Weekly honors last season and winning the conference’s Player and Setter of the Year awards, Logan case picked up right where she left off, averaging 12.00 assists per set and recording two double-doubles, taking home the league’s first Setter of the Week award.

SETTING STANDARDS

Logan case led the nation in total assists in 2023 and is currently the active NCAA leader with 5,241 assists. The Maineville, Ohio native is nearly 1,000 ahead of Colorado State’s Emery Herman, who is second among active DI setters. Case is already WMU’s all-time leader and currently ranks seventh in Mid-American Conference history.
