Preview: New England Revolution vs. St. Louis City – Prediction, Team News, Lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday’s Major League Soccer clash between New England Revolution and St. Louis City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

New England Revolution confront with St. Louis City at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night and will be looking to get back on track in front of their fans in MLS Gameweek 30.

For the Revs, who also have two games left, a playoff spot is still within reach, but they will need to improve their abysmal home form to give themselves a chance in the final stretch of the regular season.

New England felt the break worked to its advantage when it returned to action in late August after the Leagues Cup with a 5-0 win over Montreal.

However, the 2-0 defeat at Real Salt Lake last time was a clear setback for Caleb PorterThe Liverpool team suffered a defeat against the third-placed team in the Western Conference.

As a result of this loss, the Revs are now in third-to-last place in the East, although their ranking does not tell the whole truth and does not exclude them from participating in the postseason playoffs.

The hosts have collected 26 points in 25 games, seven fewer than eighth-place Toronto and five fewer than ninth-place Atlanta. They have played three fewer games than Toronto and two fewer than the ninth-place team.

A place in the guaranteed top seven spots may be out of reach for the Revs, but a spot in the wildcard round is possible if they correct their streak of just one win in six games in the final nine games of the regular season.

Although St. Louis can mathematically hope for one of the coveted seven spots that guarantee participation, or sneak into qualification via eighth or ninth place, these prospects are slim.

The Missouri team is nine points behind Minnesota (ninth place) and 13 points behind the trio of Seattle (eighth place), Houston (seventh place) and Portland (sixth place), who all have 40 points in the Western Conference.

With no games left and seven games remaining in the regular season, John Hackworth may have difficulty motivating his team for the rest of the season.

To their credit, they have picked up four points out of a possible six since MLS play resumed following the Leagues Cup. They drew an eight-goal thriller against the Portland Timbers before beating LA Galaxy 2-1 in their most recent match.

Four points from six games would have become six from six if St. Louis had not squandered a 2-0 and 4-2 lead against the Timbers, thereby preventing two wins in the last three games.

While Hackworth’s men could extend their unbeaten streak in MLS to four this weekend, it seems too little, too late to have any significant impact on their chances of moving up to the coveted spots in the table.

Thomas ChancalayDue to knee problems, he is expected to be out of action for several more weeks. Brandon Bye (ankle) is not expected back until early next month.

The Revs will be missed Xavier Arreaga, Esmir BajraktarevicAnd Al-Hassan Yusuf due to their call-ups to the national teams of Ecuador, Bosnia and Nigeria for the international matches in September.

Unlike the hosts, St. Louis will not lose a player for the current international break, even if Joakim Nilsson (paralyze), Celio Pompeu (leg) and Tomas Ostrak (ankles) are not expected to play a role.

Cédric Teuchert has scored in two consecutive MLS games after his two goals in the Leagues Cup, and the new signing from Hanover will be looking to continue his good goalscoring qualities this weekend.

We think: New England Revolution 2-2 St Louis City

Although there is a point between the two teams in the standings, the Revs have more riding on this weekend than St. Louis. Regardless, we expect the spoils to be shared in a high-scoring tie between these clubs fighting for a clean sweep.
