FOREPLAY

– This is the 99th meeting between the schools. Auburn leads the series 48-47-3.

– Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT.

1ST QUARTER

After an attempt to score on fourth down from their own 40-yard line, Auburn is unable to capitalize and Opelika takes over with excellent field position. The Opelika offense stalls after reaching Auburn’s 30-yard line. The Bulldogs tried to lure Auburn offsides, but the Tigers defense remained disciplined. The Bulldogs punted the ball for a touchback as Auburn gained possession for the second time in the game.

LANDING! Omar Mabson breaks free on the sideline and scores a 59-yard touchdown, giving Auburn a quick 7-0 lead.

2ND QUARTER

As the second quarter begins, both teams are punished in a physical game. It looks like the team that stays the most disciplined will win. Auburn quarterback Jackson Kilgore fights his way to a first down on fourth-and-4. However, a holding call brings the Tigers back on the next play, giving them a first-and-20. After a key pass breakup to keep the drive going, Kilgore throws his first interception of the season.

LANDING! The interception proved costly, as Opelika had to make a long, methodical drive and eventually turned the ball into a touchdown that tied the game.

Auburn’s Charlie Ward takes the pitch from the outside and does his best balancing act on the sideline as he scores his third touchdown of the season. That was all the action in the first half, as Auburn goes into halftime with a touchdown lead.

3RD QUARTER

LANDING! Calvin Hughley gets Opelika going by handing the ball off to the Auburn 31-yard line on the first play. He scores a 31-yard touchdown on the next play as Opelika ties the score.

On Auburn’s first drive of the half, which seemed to have some momentum, the Tigers stalled and were given an intentional grounding penalty on third down. The Tigers’ special teams were able to pin them deep with a punt when Opelika took over inside their own 15-yard line.

After an impressive opening drive by Opelika, both offenses were unable to get anything done as each defense continued to impose its will. Opelika will punt with 3:57 left in the third inning. At the end of the third inning, both defenses continued to dominate and went into the fourth inning tied at 14-14.

4TH QUARTER

Opelika starts the fourth inning with another long touchdown drive as the quarterback rolls out to the left to find his receiver in the back of the end zone.

A thrilling finale awaits us as Kilgore finds Joshua Askew on a deep post route, who brings the ball down inside the 5-yard line. Two plays later, Mabson scores his second touchdown of the game.

LANDING! After making a crucial big-play catch on the previous drive, Askew delivered another touchdown to give Auburn a 28-21 lead.

INTERCEPT! With 1:42 left, Auburn almost had the win secured when Alex Gamston intercepted the Bulldogs’ pass in one of the most important plays of the game.

Auburn wins this 99th game 28-21 against city rival Opelika. They improve their season record to 3-0 and Opelika falls to 2-1.
