Eagles defense shows promising signs in win over Packers | Who stood out the most?

Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Tuesday he will learn how good their defense can be this season based on their performance against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1.

In the Eagles’ 34-29 victory over the Packers on Friday at the Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil, Fangio’s defense showed great potential despite allowing a total of 414 yards and many points.

In the first quarter, the Eagles’ defense stepped up and allowed only two field goals after the offense lost the ball twice inside the 20-yard line. At the end of the first quarter, they were only down 6-0, down from 14-0.

“The slow start was offensive. The defense worked its ass off to start the game,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni told reporters after Friday’s game. “To play as poorly as we did offensively and be down 6-0 to start the game is pretty impressive. And hats off to the defense.”

The Eagles only gave up 10 points in the second half.

Safety Reed Blankenship intercepted a pass at Green Bay’s 25-yard line in the third quarter. Four plays later, running back Saquon Barkley ran for a two-yard touchdown to give the Eagles a 31-26 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Green Bay launched a 10-play offense that lasted over five minutes but was stopped at the Eagles’ eight-yard line. The Packers settled for a 26-yard field goal, making it a two-point game (31-29) with less than eight minutes left in the game.

The next time Green Bay got the ball, they were trailing 34-29 with 22 seconds left and needed to go 84 yards for a touchdown. Philadelphia’s defense made a few more stops to put the game away.

The Eagles have good defensive potential, but there are some areas where there is still room for improvement, such as stopping explosive plays and increasing pressure on the quarterback.

Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed scored a 33-yard touchdown and a 70-yard touchdown in the second quarter. On the last one, Reed caught a pass near Philadelphia’s 40-yard line, ran up the field and outran Eagles safety CJ Gardner-Johnson to break free for a touchdown.

Aside from Reed’s two big plays, the Eagles did a good job of keeping Green Bay’s passing offense in check.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love, who left the game on the final drive with a leg injury, completed only 17 of 34 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns.

The Eagles were only able to sack Love twice because edge rushers Bryce Huff, Josh Sweat and Nolan Smith did not generate enough pressure.

Green Bay also developed a successful running game, averaging 7.8 yards per carry and finishing with 163 total yards.

In the next few weeks, the Eagles will need to stop the run better, get more sacks, and avoid explosive plays to turn their potential into consistent success.

Eagles linebacker Zack Baun, who signed a one-year deal with the team in the offseason, finished with a team-high 15 tackles and two sacks, and if he continues to play well, it could raise the defense’s ceiling.

First-round rookie cornerback Quinyon Mitchell finished with two pass breakups and stayed tough in coverage.

“The moment is never too big for Q,” Sirianni said of Mitchell. “I’ve seen that from the beginning with Q. … He doesn’t get rattled. For example, when he’s up against AJ Brown and Devonta Smith (in practice), they’re two of the best wide receivers in the NFL. And that’s pretty awesome, right? Iron sharpens iron.”

When the Eagles face the Atlanta Falcons at home next Monday, Fangio can learn a little more about the quality of his defense. To win the game, they will need to stop Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins and running back Bijan Robinson, among others.
