9 new movies and series to watch this weekend on Netflix, Apple TV Plus and more (September 6-8)
School is back in session, which makes weekends all the better, and there are plenty of treats to enjoy among the new movies and shows to watch this weekend. NetflixApple TV Plus and other top Streaming services.
Topping our list for the weekend is Season 4 of Slow Horses, which sees Emmy-nominated Gary Oldman return for more spy thriller action. Premiering is the beachcore crime thriller The Perfect Couple, starring Nicole Kidman, and the miniseries Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, starring Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle and more.
In movies, Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning animation The Boy and the Heron is coming to streaming subscriptions, while Netflix unveils action flick Rebel Ridge. Here’s our guide to what to watch this weekend.

“Slow Horses” Season 4 (Apple TV Plus)

I’m not sure how Slow Horses went unnoticed for so long, but now the show is finally ready to break into the mainstream, earning five nominations at this year’s Emmys, including Best Drama Series.
Upping the ante, Season 4 kicks off with a literal bang – a bombing that unearths long-buried MI5 secrets. These secrets involve Slough House agent River Cartwright’s grandfather (Jack Lowden), falling MI5 legend David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce). When River’s boss, the ever-disheveled but sharp-witted Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), gets to the bottom of the mystery, he comes across Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving), their most dangerous antagonist yet.

“The Perfect Couple” (Netflix)

Nicole Kidman stars in another soap opera crime thriller based on a best-selling novel, this time written by Elin Hilderbrand. She plays Greer Garrison Winbury, a famous novelist and wife of wealthy Tag Winbury (Liev Schreiber). Greer disapproves of her son’s fiancée, Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson), but is determined to plan the most lavish wedding Nantucket has ever hosted for the sake of her son Benji (Billy Howle). Then a body turns up on the beach and everyone becomes suspicious.

“Fight Night: The Heist” (Peacock)

One of the most significant cultural moments of the last half century is the setting for this heist miniseries. On the night of October 26, 1970, Muhammad Ali returns to boxing after a four-year suspension for refusing to enlist in the Vietnam War. But the drama isn’t limited to the ring.
Elsewhere in Atlanta, wealthy fans gather for an exclusive after-party at a luxury mansion when a group of armed men show up to rob them of their jewelry. The police are quick to point the finger at Gordon “Chicken Man” Williams (Kevin Hart), but he is determined to clear his name. First, he must convince his old foe JD Hudson (Don Cheadle), one of the first black detectives in the city’s desegregated police force.

“English Teacher” (FX)

FX’s latest comedy revisits the hit series Abbott Elementary. Series creator Brian Jordan Alvarez plays a high school teacher in Austin, Texas. Evan Marquez finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional, and political aspects of his workplace. At his side are his colleagues, including his best friend Gwen Sanders (Stephanie Koenig), the optimistic history teacher; the gruff and abrasive gym teacher Markie Hillridge (Sean Patton); the entrepreneurial career counselor Rick (Carmen Christopher); and Principal Grant Moretti (Enrico Colantoni), who wants nothing more than peace.
After a minor scandal involving his ex, Evan imposes a rule not to date other faculty members… and in the process meets the very charming new teacher Harry (Langston Kerman).

The intoxicating but toxic relationship between Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) fuels this romantic drama. In season 1, set in 2007, they met as students at Baird College. In season 2, they return to Baird after their dramatic breakup earlier this summer.
But as they stop talking to each other and look for new partners, their addictive dynamic soon proves to be inevitable – not only for themselves, but also for their extended circle of friends.

“Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Business” (Netflix)

Two of the famous competitive eaters went head to head in the ultimate rematch. Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi competed in a live hot dog eating contest on Labor Day. You can watch the recording on demand.
In the 2000s, the two men engaged in a bitter rivalry at the legendary Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island. Kobayashi came out of retirement to face Chestnut one last time to determine the true champion (no spoilers!).

“The Boy and the Heron” (Max)

Legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki came out of retirement to make this film to the delight of fans around the world. The Boy and the Heron ultimately earned Miyazaki his second Oscar.
The coming-of-age fantasy is heavily based on Miyazaki’s own life. After losing his mother in war, young Mahito moves to the countryside with his father and new stepmother. There he encounters a strange gray heron who leads him to an ancient tower that is a portal to an oceanic world shared by the living and the dead. With the heron as his guide, Mahito embarks on a journey of discovery and enlightenment.

“Rebel Ridge” (Netflix)

This action thriller comes from Jeremy Saulnier, director of “Green Room” and “Hold the Dark.” Former Marine Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre) comes to the town of Shelby Springs to post bail for his cousin, but his life savings are wrongfully confiscated by the corrupt local police under Police Chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson).
Although Terry finds an unexpected ally in court clerk Summer McBride (AnnaSophia Robb), they soon become entangled in a deep-rooted conspiracy with deadly consequences. Terry is forced to use his very special skills to obtain justice, protect Summer, and break the police’s hold on the community.
