Match report: Packers vs. Eagles

Eagles football is back from Brazil!

The Eagles and Packers officially opened their 2024 season on Friday night with the historic first NFL game in South America.

In a battle that went back and forth throughout all four quarters, the Eagles won 34-29 and are 1-0 in the new season.

“What an incredible atmosphere for a football game. We miss the Linc (Lincoln Financial Field), we miss our fans at the Linc, but Brazil, I mean, wow, that was incredible. And it was fun, it felt like a playoff atmosphere. I mean, guys from Brazil, that was something incredible, and we really appreciate that, we appreciate the hospitality, we appreciate the support of the fans,” said head coach Nick Sirianni.

“It was great, it was loud the whole time. It’s been great since we’ve been here. They treated us well and it’s just been great to see the city. So I’m glad we had the opportunity to come here and play,” said wide receiver AJ Brown.

  • After a touchdown play was called back due to conflicting offense and defense penalties, the Packers were forced to punt on their first drive. Green Bay was ready on fourth and sixth attempts, but a false start set them back and led to a punt.
  • An interception by Xavier McKinney on a throw by Jalen Hurts gave the Packers the ball at the Eagles’ 19-yard line. The defense held firm and didn’t let Green Bay into the end zone, but a 31-yard field goal by Brayden Narveson put the Packers ahead. (Packers 3 – Eagles 0)
  • Hurts dropped a snap from center Cam Jurgens and the Packers regained possession at the Eagles’ 13-yard line. The Packers were again kept out of the end zone after good coverage by Quinyon Mitchell and Darius Slay. Narveson scored another field goal to extend the first quarter lead. (Packers 6 – Eagles 0)
  • “Just stick to the most important thing, the most important thing, and keep going. I think we responded as a team. We all experienced some adversity, but we all gave it our all and kept pushing forward. Those are all things you can control, and we continue to find our rhythm as a football team. But it’s always good when you can solve it with the win. It’s so nice to start the season with a win,” Hurts said.
  • TOUCHDOWN! Jalen Hurts threw a rope from the 18-yard line as Saquon Barkley caught the ball in the end zone, scoring the Eagles’ first touchdown of the year. (Eagles 7 – Packers 6)
  • “It’s a great start. Because at the end of the day, the most important thing is to win games and that’s hard to do in this league, especially against such a great team,” Barkley said.
  • The Packers came back with a score of their own – wide receiver Jayden Reed came around the right side and scored a 33-yard touchdown that gave Green Bay the lead back. The Packers attempted the 2-point conversion, but Josh Jacobs was stopped by Nakobe Dean, among others. (Packers 12 – Eagles 7)
  • TOUCHDOWN! Barkley reached the end zone for the second time, weaving through the defense on an 11-yard run. Hurts led the offense down the field and completed passes to DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown, including a 3-and-1 conversion on the classic “tush push.” (Eagles 14 – Packers 12)
  • “He played really well tonight. He should have scored 4 touchdowns, I told him that too (jokingly), but he helps us, if you get the running game going, it helps the passing game, so we’re excited to have him on our team and he’s had a great start to the season,” Brown said of Barkley.
  • Once again, it didn’t take long for the Packers to respond. Jordan Love found Reed again, this time through the air for a 70-yard touchdown – Love’s longest touchdown pass of his career. (Packers 19 – Eagles 14)
  • After a drive that lasted over five minutes, the Eagles ended the first half with a 38-yard field goal by Jake Elliott. (Packers 19 – Eagles 17)
