What is break dancing?
Break emerged in the 1970s in the Bronx, New York City, as part of the hip-hop movement. It combines acrobatic movements, intricate footwork and a strong musical component, evolving from informal street dance competitions to a more structured competition format.
The sport gained recognition through events such as the International Battle of the Year, launched in 1990, and was was brought to the Olympic stage during the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.
For LA, Breaking was removed from the program in favor of five other sports: Flag football, cricket, squash, lacrosse and baseball/softball. The decision was confirmed by the Los Angeles 2028 Organising Committee, as they are convinced that the new sports reflect the interests of the community in the USA.
“The choice of These five new sports are in keeping with American sports culture and will showcase iconic American sports to the worldwhile bringing international sports to the United States. These sports make the Olympic Games LA28 unique,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “Their inclusion will enable the Olympic Movement to reach new athlete and fan communities in the United States and around the world.”
The World DanceSport Federation said: “While we are deeply disappointed by LA28’s decision, we are proud of everything that has been achieved together with the breaking community in such a short space of time.”
