On a night when the authorities ignored justice

What is The Big Crab Cake?
Each week, we select an unsung hero – a player whose contribution during a particular game went a long way toward the team’s success, but whose efforts may have been overshadowed by some of the game’s more notable highlights. In Maryland, steamed crab is king, but that haul becomes crab cakes, an unremarkable byproduct of a Chesapeake Bay delicacy.
Now that we have clarified what the Big Crab Cake is, the question is, who is the first recipient?
Some players enjoy doing the dirty work. They accept the responsibility of taking on difficult tasks that, when done right, give others the opportunity to shine and thus improve the team’s chances of winning. Justice Hill is one of those guys.
Justice has been a key contributor on special teams over the past few seasons. He is used in many situations with a lot of distance and space that lend themselves to passing plays. Justice is an adept pass defender and has a good sense of when, where and how to break out of the backfield. He provides Lamar Jackson with a comfortable safety valve when preferred progressions are not possible. Last night in Kansas City, Hill did just that during the Ravens’ first possession. Justice was practiced!
With 13:29 left in the first quarter, Lamar faced a 3rd-and-11 from his own 29-yard line and couldn’t find what he wanted. So he threw the ball to Hill, who initially looked like he was going to be brought down just before the uprights. Instead, Justice skillfully navigated the sideline, brought the ball forward 18 yards and set up a touchdown drive that turned out to be 11 plays and 70 yards and consumed 6:46 of game time. The perfect recipe for a game against the reigning world champions.
In total, Justice caught six balls for 52 yards and ran determinedly after the catch in the game’s crucial moments. But his contribution did not end there.
When he wasn’t being used as a primary receiver or checkdown player, Hill did something the right side of the Ravens’ offensive line struggled with all night – he blocked. And twice, in the most crucial moments of the game, on two plays that took up the last two plays, Justice Hill had to block one of the NFL’s strongest defensive linemen, the 300-pound, five-time Pro Bowler Chris Jones, at all 190 pounds – and he did a passable job. Check it out.
Incredible performance by Justice Hill to take on and hold his own against Chris Jones twice.
Absolutely bizarre/lazy of the Ravens to completely bypass defenses against these attacks, especially defenses like a 3-man rush. Put an RB on Chris Jones and sacrifice a route. pic.twitter.com/XEbkdN43AT

Crucial catches, excellent awareness and outstanding pound-for-pound blocking skills on the national stage are valuable and undervalued contributions that are sometimes overlooked – but not by The Big Crab Cake.
