Governor Kay Ivey celebrates National Preparedness Month and calls on Alabama citizens to take action

Since September is National Preparedness Month, Governor Kay Ivey is urging all Alabama residents to develop a plan and prepare before a disaster strikes.

“Alabamians know that disasters can strike without adequate warning and that preparation is our best defense,” said Governor Ivey. “During National Preparedness Month, I encourage everyone to take the time to create a plan, stock up on essential supplies and make sure your family knows what to do in an emergency. A little preparation now can save lives later.”

The theme for National Preparedness Month this year is “Start a Conversation.” Starting a conversation about emergency equipment, communications, reunification plans, shelters, pets, family members and the hazards in your area can help you and your family be better prepared in the event of a disaster.

“National Preparedness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness to take action in creating a plan by updating and gathering everything needed to protect your family during a disaster,” said Jeff Smitherman, director of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. “Alabama knows the unpredictable and sometimes damaging effects of Mother Nature. While we can’t stop a hurricane, tornado or flash flood, we can take steps to reduce their impact on our lives and better protect ourselves and our loved ones.”

National Preparedness Month is a good time to focus on ensuring access to timely and accurate information and to have a go kit ready with all the essentials you need if you are cut off from basic services.

The Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommend that every household have a basic emergency kit containing the following items:

-Water and non-perishable food for several days

-Mobile phone with weather/news apps and additional mobile phone battery or charger

– Battery-powered or hand-held radio that can receive NOAA weather alerts as well as local news broadcasts

-Flashlight with spare batteries

-A first aid kit

-Prescription drugs and glasses

-Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person

It is equally important that Alabama residents develop and coordinate emergency plans with their family and close friends in the event that an evacuation or shelter search becomes necessary.

“By taking proactive action today, we can reduce the risks and protect our loved ones and homes in times of crisis. I encourage all Alabama residents to do their part to stay strong and be prepared for any disaster that may come our way,” added Governor Ivey.
