In the eight-part series, four-time Pro Bowler Michael Vick speaks with past and present NFL greats to document the history of black quarterbacks across the league.

“I’m excited to be part of this project because as a kid, all I wanted was a chance to play in the National Football League,” Vick said. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be the first African-American quarterback drafted No. 1.”

“I know that was a big step for us in society. I’ve always been told that I revolutionized the quarterback position, but I also want to give credit to those I idolized growing up who paved the way, like Randall Cunningham, Steve McNair and Donovan McNabb. When you look at the evolution of the black quarterback, it’s thanks to the guys who came before us. And now I’m thankful for the dual threat concept that changed the game for the better.”

Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles and Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys were among the active players interviewed for the series. Legendary quarterbacks Donovan McNabb and Cam Newton also provided their insights.

For generations, black quarterbacks have been victims of discrimination that has hampered their careers in one way or another. In promoting his 2022 book Rise of the Black Quarterback: What It Means for AmericaESPN’s Jason Reid said that people in the NFL thought “black players weren’t smart enough to play the position of ultimate thinker.”

Warren Moon, who didn’t make his NFL debut until age 27 before embarking on a Hall of Fame career, offered a similar perspective in a 2020 interview with CNN’s Calum Trenaman, speaking of the perception that black players “can only play certain positions.”

“And the quarterback position was a position that a lot of people didn’t think was a good fit for us for a variety of reasons, whether it was the leadership skills, whether it was the ability to think and make critical decisions at critical moments,” Moon said. “You know, being the face of a franchise, all those different things that come with being a franchise quarterback.”

The signs of progress are obvious. Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens is a two-time MVP. Mahomes is widely considered the best quarterback in the NFL and in 2023 he will face Hurts in the first Super Bowl to feature two black starting quarterbacks.

Still, a 2023 SFGATE investigation found evidence that “teams chronically undervalued black quarterbacks in the draft between 2010 and 2022.” The outlet concluded that black quarterbacks performed better on average than their counterparts, but that was not reflected in where they were drafted.

A detailed documentary series like Development of the black quarterback remains as relevant as ever.
