Ravens’ Tucker doesn’t want to revisit incident with Chiefs

OWINGS MILLS, Maryland – Before last season’s AFC Championship Game, Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker watched as Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes tossed aside his kicking tee and tight end Travis Kelce hurled his helmet off the field.

On Sunday, Tucker decided not to bring up the incident again before Thursday night’s rematch against the two-time Super Bowl defending champion Chiefs.

“All I can say is I’m excited to come to a great environment, play a great football team with great players and great coaches and do everything I can to prepare myself to help the Ravens win a football game,” Tucker said after practice Sunday. “And that’s all I have to say about that.”

Thursday marks the first time the teams have met since the Chiefs’ 17-10 victory in the AFC Championship Game, when Mahomes and Kelce took exception to Tucker stretching near where Mahomes had warmed up 90 minutes before the game. Multiple videos showed Mahomes twice knocking aside Tucker’s kicking tee and Kelce then kicking several of Tucker’s balls aside, sending Tucker’s helmet flying off the field at M&T Bank Stadium.

When asked if he would prepare the same way Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium, Tucker replied, “I’m going to focus on getting ready for the football game and helping the Ravens win. That’s all I care about.”

Tucker, the NFL’s most accurate kicker, previously explained that kickers across the league have always prepared for games this way. Kickers make multiple attempts at both goal posts to get a feel for the wind and the playing surface.

A day after the AFC Championship Game, Tucker said he thought the Mahomes-Kelce altercation was “all game play, all fun.” He added, “But it seemed like it was taken a little more seriously. I’m absolutely willing to let it all go.”

Kelce then said Tucker violated an “unwritten rule” by placing equipment where Mahomes could break free, adding that the All-Pro kicker “provoked the bear.”
