Why is ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ PG-13? Here’s a guide for parents – Deseret News

Beetlejuice will soon usher in the spooky season. Can the whole family enjoy it together?

It’s been 26 years since Beetlejuice tested the boundaries of a PG-rated film. The horror comedy teeters on the cusp of family-friendliness with frequent references to death, gory imagery, innuendo and an infamous F-bomb from Michael Keaton.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice takes the macabre, language, and suggestive content to the next level, so the film may not be suitable for younger viewers.

Here’s a guide for parents on why Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is rated PG-13 and what content you can expect from the film.

Why is “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” rated PG-13?

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association due to “violent content, macabre and bloody images, strong language, some suggestive content, and brief drug use,” according to IMDb.

The sequel tells a “darker and relatively more adult story” than the 1988 film and “takes the adult themes to the next level,” according to Screen Rant.

Beetlejuice makes lewd comments toward Lydia (Winona Ryder) and Delores (Monica Bellucci). In the trailer, Astrid (Jenna Ortega) accuses a group of her classmates of “sleeping with their Pilates instructors” to fill a void.

Jump scares, gruesome creatures, and sharp weapons such as knives are seen throughout the film. Strong language is used frequently.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” contains many bloody images

Like its predecessor, Beetlejuice is full of bloody, heartbreaking imagery. Most of this imagery is cartoonish, but could still be frightening for younger viewers.

You see a woman having her face stapled shut, a ghost’s head being taken on and off, cartoonish intestines spilling out of Michael Keaton’s stomach, and Winona Ryder’s lips being sewn shut.

When the film drifts into the underworld, “characters are shown cut in half or with their viscera exposed, sickly colored or blue from suffocation or other suffering, with shrunken heads or simply skeletons,” according to People. Some of the characters in the afterlife describe their gruesome deaths in detail.

Critics praise the morbid humor of the sequel to “Beetlejuice”

First reviews of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” praise the sequel for its scary, slimy and macabre humor.

“Tim Burton’s belated sequel to 1988’s weird, wild and hilariously macabre Beetlejuice is bursting with morbid, sickening delights,” writes Slant Magazine.

“Suffice it to say that nobody portrays death quite like Tim Burton, and it’s a pleasure to follow him back to the underworld,” writes the London Evening Standard. “You’ll leave the cinema and return to the world of the living with a spring in your step and a smile on your face.”

Which actors are returning for the sequel to “Beetlejuice”?

Michael Keaton will return in “Beetlejuice” as the title character Beetlejuice. Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara will also reprise their roles as Lydia and Delia Deetz.

Joining the cast of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice are Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s teenage daughter Astrid and Justin Theroux as a new character named Rory. Willem Dafoe, Danny DeVito and Monica Bellucci are also part of the cast of the sequel.

The couple who recently died in “Beetlejuice,” played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, will not appear in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”

“I think for me it was a case of not just checking any boxes, so even though they were such an amazing integral part of the first one, I focused on something else,” director Tim Burton told People about his decision not to include the couple in the sequel.

When is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice coming out?

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” will be released in cinemas nationwide on Friday, September 6, 2024.
