The two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs are poised for another strong season in 2024 after adding to their wide receiver group. In the NFL Draft, the franchise selected wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who broke the NFL Combine record in the 40-yard dash, in the first round. The team also signed wide receiver Hollywood Brown as a free agent.

But their best wide receiver, Rashee Rice, faces legal issues early in the season. The second-year player was reportedly involved in a car crash in Dallas that left two people hospitalized.

Why is Rashee Rice not suspended? What we know about Chiefs WR’s legal situation

Here’s a complete timeline of Rice’s offseason.

Timeline of Rashee Rice

March 30: Dallas Police report a serious injury accident on the North Central Expressway.

April 10: Dallas police issued a warrant for Rice’s arrest for involvement in the six-car crash. Rice is named as one of two drivers who “were speeding in the far left lane of the North Central Expressway near University Boulevard. The drivers caused a chain reaction that involved four additional vehicles in the collision.”

The arrest warrant contained:

  • A case of serious bodily harm
  • A case of collision with serious personal injuries
  • Six cases of collision with personal injury

Dallas Police spokeswoman Kristin Lowman told USA TODAY Sports that a Lamborghini driven by Rice went out of control and veered onto the shoulder of the road, hitting the median wall. Two occupants were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

11 April: Rice turns himself in to Glenn Heights police and his case is being processed at a regional jail in Desoto, Texas, south of Dallas.

16 April: Rice and Teddy Knox, a Southern Methodist University cornerback who was also allegedly involved in the accident, were named in a $10 million lawsuit.

Plaintiffs Irina Gromova and Edvard Petrovskiy claim that Rice and Knox intentionally drove at high speeds on March 30 and showed negligence toward the accident victims.

“Despite innocent victims calling for emergency assistance and desperately attempting to exit their wrecked vehicles in a state of shock, (Rice and Knox) intentionally and knowingly avoided aid to injured commuters and fled the scene of the accident,” the lawsuit states. “The victims and bystanders to the carnage attempted to attack (Rice and Knox), but they were ignored in (their) attempt to flee without accountability.”

Knox was suspended from the Southern Methodist University football team.

May 7: Dallas police included Rice in an investigation into allegedly punching a photographer outside a Dallas club. Rice was not charged.

May 21: Dallas police said charges have been dropped in the case of a photographer.

29 August: NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy says Rice is unlikely to be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list.

Kansas City will face Baltimore tonight in the season opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.
