Alex Morgan announces her retirement and pregnancy

After a disappointing 2024, former Cal and international soccer star Alex Morgan announced her retirement on Thursday.

She also said she is pregnant with her second child and will play her last game as a member of the San Diego Wave on Sunday.

Morgan announced her resignation with a social media video.

“I have so much clarity about this decision and I’m so happy to finally be able to tell you,” Morgan said in the video. “It’s been a long time coming and this decision hasn’t been easy, but at the start of 2024, I felt in my heart and soul that this would be the last season I would play football.”

Morgan, 35, is a two-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist. With 123 international goals, she ranks fifth in the history of the US women’s national team.

However, 2024 has been a difficult year for Mordan. She was initially left out of the U.S. squad for the Concacaf Gold Cup in February, but was added to the squad after another player was injured the day before the tournament began. Morgan started most of the U.S. games after that, but missed a month of playing time after suffering a high ankle sprain on April 19.

Her goal-scoring ability has noticeably diminished, and she has not scored a single goal for the U.S. team since scoring in the second game of the Concacaf Gold Cup in February.

Morgan has not scored a single goal for the San Diego Wave this season, either in National Women’s Soccer League games or in the Wave’s non-league games.

In 2022, she led the NWSL with 15 goals, and last year she scored seven goals.

The biggest disappointment, however, came when new USWNT coach Emma Hayes left Morgan out of the Americans’ 18-man roster for the Olympics. Morgan wasn’t even named as one of the four alternates, and when a substitute was named to the active roster after being injured in a game, Morgan wasn’t named as a substitute.

Morgan made her debut for the USWNT in 2010. That same year, she scored a goal in a FIFA World Cup playoff game that helped the United States qualify for the 2011 World Cup.

She soon became a regular on the US team and remained one of its key players for years.
