77 TV shows receive ReFrame seal for gender-equitable productions

IMDbPro and ReFrame, a gender equity coalition founded by the Sundance Institute and Women In Film Los Angeles, have awarded the ReFrame Stamp for Gender Equal Casting to 77 of the 200 most popular TV and streaming series of 2023 and 2024. Series that received the stamp include “Abbott Elementary,” “Fallout,” “Hacks,” “Reservation Dogs” and “The Bear.”

The seal recognizes gender-specific attitudes and shows the potential of productions to achieve gender equality. The 77 award winners represent 38.5% of the most popular scripted series of 2023-2024, a decrease of 8.5% from 2022-2023 and 20% from the peak of 2020-2021.

Other series that also received the seal include “Baby Reindeer,” “One Day,” “Under The Bridge,” “Fellow Travelers,” Season 2 of “Cruel Summer,” “Griselda,” and more.

The organizations have joined forces to release their ReFrame report on gender and attitudes in television, which found that the representation of women and nonbinary or gender nonconforming actors in lead roles in television and streaming series has declined by 13% over the past year.

The study also found that pilot writing and directing jobs remain predominantly male. Of the 102 pilots examined, 25.5% were directed by women and 32.4% were written by women.

The report also includes a company report card that determines the percentage of each distributor’s series that meet the ReFrame Stamp criteria. With the exception of Amazon MGM Studios, distributors like Paramount, NBCU, Apple TV+ and others have a lower percentage of gender-balanced series than in 2020 – 2021, the first year of the report.

The list of all shows that have received the seal is available on the ReFrame website.
